How to Tell Your Boss that You Are Pregnant

Maggie Lee
Sometimes life can be quite unpredictable. Maybe yesterday afternoon 30 minutes before you finished your work, your boss asked you to see him in his office and he announced you that soon he would nominate you for a promotion, meanwhile he expected you to take more responsibility in your job; this morning, as soon as you arrived in office, you received a phone call from your family doctor who announced that: You are pregnant!

When you put down the phone, you are happy and excited, but at the same time, you might ask yourself: 'How should I announce this cheerful news to my boss? Will he be as happy as I am?' OK, don't be worried. There are some simple tips to help you announce your pregnancy in a proper way:

1- Choose the right moment.

Maybe during the first several months of pregnancy, your tummy is till flat enough to avoid the attention from your boss. But the problem i: during the time of waiting, your boss might be planning some important projects that would depend on you for the whole of the following year. Therefore, you should not wait too long before you inform your boss of your pregnancy.

You should choose a day on which your boss seems happy and relaxed. For example, it can be a day that your team wins a big contract or a day that clients make some good comments about your work.

2- Plan what you should say, before you step into the boss' office.

Every employer desires his employee to deliver productive work at all the time. So you can try to convince your boss that even during your pregnancy, you will accomplish your work fruitfully. You might not be able to stay in the office to work over time as much as before, but you are willing to finish the extra work while you stay home.

If your company can hire someone to help you handle the tough job during the pregnancy, or hire someone to temporarily replace you during your maternity leave, you can tell your boss you have a good plan to train this temporary substitute. And you will leave some detailed and clear instructions to the office before you take your maternity leave.

3- Create a closer relationship with your boss.

If your boss is a parent, you might ask him about his parenting experience. This kind of conversation can always bring your relation closer to your boss and he might always be proud to mention his kids in front of you. Then this pregnancy conversation will end in a very cosy atmosphere.
