How to Tell If a Friend or Family Member is Using Drugs
Is Someone You Know Heading Down the Path of Drug Abuse and Addiction?
The most common indicators that a person is using or abusing drugs fall within three categories: physical, emotional and behavioral. Although no one or two things stand alone as proof that someone is using or abusing drugs, the "big picture" will provide enough evidence to help you know when it's time to address the matter at a professional level.
Physical
Bloodshot eyes and either dilated or severely constricted pupils, depending on the drug that's used. Injection marks, runny nose or sniffling, puffy face and itching. Loss of appetite, along with rapid weight loss. Noticeable change in skin tone or color.
In the early stages of drug use, a person will generally try to hide these signs. Later, as their use progresses, they may be either less able to hide their drug use or less concerned about hiding it.
Emotional
Loss of interest in activities, hobbies and other people that were once enjoyed. Apathy about things they used to feel strongly about. Defensiveness and extreme sensitivity not previously exhibited. Erratic moods, sudden or frequent mood changes. Someone who is usually pleasant and upbeat may become depressed and sullen. Someone who is normally quiet and calm may become hyper and easily excited. Unusual aggressiveness or quick to argue or lash out either verbally or physically.
Behavioral
Change in eating habits. Loss of pride in personal appearance and hygiene. Change in companions and activities that might better accommodate drug use. Poor work or school attendance. Change in daily routine. Less time spent with family and close friends. Reclusive, private or isolating behaviors. Spending time alone behind locked doors. Coming home late or leaving home early. Erratic behaviors atypical for the individual. Change in sleep habits. Staying up unusually late or sleeping more than usual. Staying up for long periods of time, followed by excessive sleep.
These are all indicators that drug abuse and addiction may be developing. If you are unable to hold a reasonable conversation with the person you suspect is abusing drugs, contact a drug rehab facility or professional who can answer your questions and give you some guidance. There are many ways to treat drug abuse and addiction short of a residential rehab facility. Twelve Step support groups are available in virtually every community, and out-patient programs can also be of great assistance. Regardless of the path you choose, understand that drug use and addiction is a health issue worthy of treatment and the same consideration that any other disease would receive.
