How to Tell If a Person is Lying

Don't Be Deceived, Here Are Some Tips to Know How to Catch a Liar

Noel Galvez
Do you want to catch a liar? Do you want to know if a person is lying? Do you sometimes feel so impressed and believe everything that the person is saying, only to find out that he or she is lying to you?

You can really never tell what a person's motive is. Even the courts can't do that. But they base their judgment on facts. Here, I will show you the symptoms to know if you have to be cautious.

The Signs

1. A Liar Cannot Look Straight In The Eye - This is the easiest person to catch. A liar tries to avoid being stared at while making up his excuses because his guilt might get exposed. Remember the saying that the eyes are the windows to your soul. It is true.

2. A "Pathological Liar " Can Look Straight In The Eye - Now, you may say that I have just contradicted my earlier statement. However, some liars are used to creating one lie after another, and part of their practice is looking someone straight in the eye, for the reason that a lot of people know about statement #1.

3. A Liar Exaggerates His Story - The out-of-this-world stories created by liars could be very interesting. You could be impressed because it could either be something that you yourself cannot do or cannot be. This person would normally lift himself/herself high enough to give you the impression that he/she has credibility.

4. A Liar Contradicts Himself - In the course of a conversation, you will find that there are contradicting statements.

5. A Liar Uses Emotional Blackmail - A liar would make you believe that he/she is an underdog, a protagonist in a soap opera. Your tendency then would be to take his/her side.

6. A Liar Is Manipulative - A liar would say everything to make you dance to his/her tune. At first, you will see that he/she is doing things for your benefit. Then after some time of being with him/her, you will find out that she would be doing the same thing to others.

7. A Liar Creates Smokescreens - A liar could either create another issue to deviate from the real issue. He could either do it in a diplomatic way or with coercion, by raising his voice.

8. A Liar's Tone Of Voice Is Different - If you've been with that person for a long time, you will notice that his tone of voice will suddenly change. If he's the hyper type of person, he will suddenly try hard to sound very calm, or vice versa.

How do you know if you are a vulnerable person?

1. You easily believe whatever a person says.

2. When two persons are arguing, you tend to believe the first person you talk to. Make sure you get the story of both sides to see the big picture.

3. Your impatience will make you quickly act on something. Before getting into something, do your research first, especially on internet related businesses.

4. You easily get distracted. If this is you, you have to stick to the issue.

Remember, the objective of a liar is to make you believe. His tool is his words. He will take advantage of your weaknesses -- maybe the way you think (to be able to distract you); or maybe your dreams. He will try to show you that he is the answer to your problem. If you believe, then you will be blinded for some time, because you are going to hope that he holds the key to your future.

Multiple conversations with the same person will enable you to get more information and let you cross examine him/her. So time will tell if a person is a real liar.

But being careful will make them think twice before they lie to you.

My father was honest and sincere in business but his stories of incidences of his past grew. He loved to entertain people with them. Some might call him a liar, we all preferred the term "creative talker". Good article on liars. I think the differnce is that a liar is doing it for their own benefit.

I read a book on physical signs that someone is lying...if someone is right-handed, he/she should look up to the left if an event is being recalled correctly. However, if somone is making the story up, the eyes will go to the upper-right. The situation is reversed for left-handed individuals.

I found when I was younger that it was all too easy to be trusting of what other people told me. As I got older, I got tricked a few times by liars and have become more skeptical (perhaps even jaded). Now a days I try to assume that information people give me is potentially false unless I was a first hand witness. It's amazing the lengths that some people will go to in their manipulations. So be careful out there everybody. Great article, by the way.

Corrected the typo : very nice article !...........I always look for these signs.............another important point is that liars often try to put up an alibi or use someone credible as a reference (in the absence of that person) even before you doubt their integrity.
