A few things to look for is, is your child happy to go to school, is he/she eager to get to school in the morning to see his/her friends, does your child do homework that gets sent home, is your child happy to see the teachers/assistants, these are all small signs that make a huge difference in deciding the best school for your child/ren.
I noticed other daycares, and small headstarts that I sent my son to, he just wasn't happy. He hated to get up, and get ready to go in the morning, he didn't talk to the teachers or the other students, he didn't even have fun when it was play time. He never really had anything good to say about his day.
When he first started kindergarten I went to the school to meet the teachers, and some of the classes he would be in, and I stressed to the teacher that my son may not do so well with other children, and that he seems to have a hard time concentrating, and not get distracted. I told them that these are concerns for me due to past experiences. They told me not to worry about any of that, and that that was all very normal behavior for any child when attending a new surrounding with many new people.
Right away my son came home saying he had so many new friends, and they did all kinds of cool things in the classroom, and on the playground, he was always eager to show me projects he made in school, he said almost every day how his teacher was the best. It was nothing but good things.
Every night before school he would get his clothes out that he wanted to wear the next day, and put them on the night before. I would try to get him to put pj's on but he swore to me that if he dressed for school now then he wouldn't be late in the morning for the school bus. He always checked his lunch calendar to let me know what days he would eat lunch at school, and what days he wanted to bring his own. Most of the time he wanted school lunch.
He always had really good things to say about the kids in his class. I think 3 days out of 5 he wanted to have sleep overs.
There was so many things that were just so obvious that he was really enjoying his time at school. Before I could barely get him up in the morning to attend head start, nevermind get him dressed to go. Now he's getting dressed the night before. I really believe that these signs are great ways to help decide on the best school for your child.
A lot of parents feel that the school that is best for any child is the school that rates the highest education level, and the school that is most popular, or even the school with the most class in some cases. You figure, they have to be in that school for a good 6-7 hours per day for 5 days a week.
Would you want to be there if you were miserable? I do believe that the education rate is very important but so is the childs happieness. They learn, and grow so much better when they are happy, and comfortable. It is in our hands to help our children suceed, and grow. So school surroundings are a very important part in making this happen for our children.
