How to Tell If You Have Worms

Jennifer Kirkman
There are many types of worms that travel within the human body. They take up residence in the digestive tract and this is how they are fed from whatever food we eat. That does sound gross, doesn't it? But that is how they thrive in the body. Types of worms that can travel in humans are tapeworms, pin worms, flatworms, hookworms and roundworms.

When a person is having worms of any kind in the body, they will definitely begin to feel unwell, and have an upset stomach, cramps, very foul breath odors, throwing up, and a lot of stomach aches. Other signs are passing a lot of gas, and beginning to run steady fevers. The illness with worms in the body may also often cause diarrhea that is bloody.

As the infection goes on, and invades the body further, the symptoms can become even more serious, and actually form cysts. This is the point when a person may begin to have seizure activity, and run steady fevers.

Diagnosing any condition of worms is done by taking a stool sample on different days to determine which worm infestations there are lurking in the body. A rectal examination where a physician places treated tape around the anal area, and removes it, can find out whether worms are present there or not. And another obvious way to tell is by worms in the stool itself.

Treating worms all depends on what type of worm is found in your system determined by the laboratory once your doctor has submitted stool samples. A lab technician will determine which types of worms you have by the eggs and counting the number of eggs which appear in stool.

Most worm types can be treated with a drug known as Mebendazole, and Pamoate that has been known to kill this type of worm.

People that have problems with worm infestations in their bodies usually don't cook their meats well enough as one main cause, or they live in conditions that are much less than sanitary. Water contamination can also bring about work infestations as well. Another part of the equation here, is to not eat foods that have had flies or other insects swarming around it.

It is also extremely important to practice good hygiene and cleanliness. People that are not really clean about their personal hygiene practices are more liable to have worm infestations in the body. Washing clothes after each time you wear them all day long is another way to avoid worms as well as washing your hands, keeping clothing, hands, and body, free of germs.

Another suggestion is to check your pets for any worms on them since they can transmit their worms to you. Comb and shampoo them regularly, and use flea treatments on a regular basis.
