The first question to ask yourself is:Do I want a Wii or one of the other systems? Although all of the systems can be used for anything, they do have their strengths. The Wii has less "hardcore" games and is better suited to parties and family gaming than single player or online gaming while the Xbox 360 and PS3 are better suited to online and single player than parties. Since both the Xbox and PS3 are getting motion controls in the near future, either of those systems are more versatile than the Wii in my opinion.
The next question to ask yourself is: Which system can I best afford? The Xbox 360 is cheaper but it also is the only system that requires you to pay for higher quality online play and it doesn't include Wi-Fi or the ability to play Blu-Rays.
Another important (maybe the most important question) is: Which system has the games you want to play most? For example, if you are a huge Halo fan it would be an easy decision to get a Xbox while the opposite would be true for a Metal Gear Solid fan. In my case, I wasn't very interested in the PS3 exclusives so I chose to buy a 360.
The next question is: Which console do my friends have? Now that this generation is in full swing, it is likely that at least one of your friends has one of the consoles. Playing online with friends is one of the most enjoyable things this generation offers and to ignore this question would be criminal. It is important to consider whether or not you will have anyone else you know in real life to play with.
If after all these questions you still aren't sure then you could always ask yourself: Whether you prefer Blu-Ray or downloadable movies? The Xbox 360 offers many more downloadable options: Netflix, downloadable 24 hour rentals, and the soon to arrive Zune Video store which promises to offer 1080P streaming movies. Sony's PS3 includes Blu-Ray and also has a video store, although it is more limited than 360's.
A final question: Do you want access to Facebook and Twitter or access to a virtual world? The PS3 offers Home for free, which is a virtual world where you can play games, wait in line, meet other people, and decorate your virtual apartment. Xbox is soon going to be including Facebook and Twitter in Xbox Live, as well as a free radio service for gold subscribers.
I wish you luck while choosing your console and hope these questions have been helpful.

Aaron, in one of your responses you said you needed a tie-breaker question. Why? Is your goal to be an objective writer? Or to blatantly support one side over the other? Because a true objective writer would lay down all the facts for both sides in a manor that would leave the reader to decide on their own thoughts. You admitted you forgot a major feature for the ps3, and you also admitted to wanting a "tie-breaker question". Maybe you should reconsider your philosophy on writing.
Articles on this site take a while to be approved so the slim/xbox 360 price cuts hadn't happened yet.
actually the PS3 is the same price as the Xbox Elite which is the most expensive one after they drop the price in a few days. but the PS3 is cheaper when you factor in the harddrive and wifi and rechargeable controllers. I also believe that the 360 has a 1 year warranty for everything except the RRoD and the 3 year ONLY covers the RRoD
Wow the person who wrote this must of worked for Xbox because i just promoting it doesn't talk about gaming quality lol
the ps3 has a web browser so it can do all sights including youtube so the facebook twitter thing doesn't really count
Is the Xbox cheaper? With all the current price change announcements, I wouldn't have thought this would be one of the points you'd settle with. I believe that there are also articles that show a PS3 is cheaper when priced with all the comprable components you'd have to buy seperately for an Xbox core unit (ie. Harddrive).
Also, since actually being able to play the console you paid for might be important, does the Xbox's standing reputation for hardware failure not factor into the purchasing decision?
And while some people may point to Xbox's 3 year warranty vs. PS3's one year warranty, do they remember that the Xbox warranty was extended to 3 years after the massive amount of hardware failures sparked several class action suits against MS?
Why arn't you able to edit an article you posted though? Shouldn't you be able to at least add some sort of addendum?
Lamest article ever!
Where are the reasons? My frinds have an Xbox so that what I am buying?
Movies? Is that why you buy a GAMING console?
Xbox cheaper than the PS3? I dont think so...
You suck...
and with the web browser on the PS3 you have all the videos known to man you just have to know where to look for them and the problem with Netflix on the 360 is that they are missing all of Sony Pictures movies and all their sister movie companies as well
I needed a tie-breaker question that was extremely minor for people who were still undecided and that was the only one I could think of. Unfortunately I forgot about the PS3's web browser. If I could edit it I would.
