1. Be prepared for it to take some time. Don't walk into the eTennessee Department of Safety (TDOS) office and expect to walk out with a driver's license unless you've done all that's needed. You may be able to take care of everything in one visit, but don't be disappointed if you can't. There are several things involved.
2. You need an original, certified copy of your birth certificate or a passport to prove your identity. You will also need proof of residency such as a utility bill with your name and address (no PO Box), proof of insurance and your social security card.
3. If you have any outstanding fines or tickets, they must be paid in full and cleared before you can have your license reinstated.
4. If you have been without a driver's license for more than five years, you will be required to take vision, written and driving tests. Get a book from TDOS in advance and study the written tests. Laws and regulations change. Take the sample test in the book and test online at TennesseeAnytime.org/dlpractice/ until you are sure you can pass the written test without missing more than 2-3 questions (you're allowed to miss 6). When you can pass the tests online and in the book without issues, you'll be good to go.
5. The cost for a driver's license varies by age. You can visit the TDOS website for the latest information. There will also be reinstatement fees. Contact TDOS for that information as well.
Most importantly, keep in mind that a Tennessee driver's license is a privilege and not a right. Do what is needed to get yours reinstated, then follow the law while driving to protect your privilege to drive in Tennessee.
