How to Make Thinning Hair Less Apparent

Many young men have the unsettling experience of their hair thinning at a very young age. There are a few things you can do to help slow down hair loss, but the fact of the matter is that most men will experience at least some degree of balding in their adult lives. Many young men in particular are very embarrassed by hair loss and have a strong desire to make their thinning hair less apparent. Nothing will make your thinning hair completely invisible, but luckily there are a few steps you can take to make the problem much less apparent.

1. Get a short hair cut (perhaps shorter than you're used to). This is probably the best piece of advice for men with thinning hair. It seems counter-intuitive, but hair loss tends to be much less apparent on guys with short hair than men with longer hair. A short hair cut can be especially helpful for hiding a receding hair line. Resist the urge to leave hair longer to cover up a bald spot; it won't work and you'll end up looking ridiculous. For many men with thinning hair, a "crew cut" or "military cut" is the most appropriate option.

2. Use a good styling product meant for thin hair. Many men that are experiencing hair loss make the mistake of using greasy or heavy styling products which make the problem even more visible. You want a nice, light styling product that is the consistency of a whipped putty or soft clay. It is my experience that higher-end hair products available at salons and specialty stores are better for thin hair than products that you might find in a pharmacy or grocery store.

3. Make sure you don't use too much product in your hair. In addition to choosing the right product for your thinning hair, it is important that you not use too much product when styling your hair. A little bit of product goes a long way, especially in short & thin hair. Anything that will weigh down your hair or make it greasy will only make your hair loss more apparent. When it comes to thin hair, the old adage "just a dab'll do ya" definitely applies.

By following these simple steps, you can make your thinning hair much less apparent to other people. Although these tips may help you feel better about your hair loss in the short-term, for most men is an irreversible process that simply comes with age. Learning to embrace the way you look, with or without hair, is one of the best steps you can take to feel better about your appearance.
