How About Those Red Sox
Yankees Come to Boston This Weekend
Maybe it's Matsuzaka's giroball, maybe it's Schilling's fast ball, maybe it's Beckett's record breaking start; whatever it is, it has Boston in a Fenway frenzy.
The rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees has been going on since the beginning of time. Well, that might be an exaggeration, but it sure feels that way. When the Yankees come into Boston, all eyes follow the skies to the CITGO sign in Kenmore Square, gearing up for battle once again.
This weekend the Yankees return to Boston for a three game series. The Red Sox fans are hoping to see the latest addition to the Yankee's pitching lineup, Roger Clemens. The Rocket, once a Red Sox pitching machine, striking out 20 in one game will not be making an appearance this weekend to the great dismay of both Yankee's and Red Sox fans.
The fray will commence with Yankee's Chien-Ming-Wang against Tim Wakefield. Will Tim's knuckleball be enough to defeat the young, powerful right hander? If you are a Boston follower, you have visions of the knuckleball dancing, twirling and spinning right past Derek Jeter for the called strike. When the weather is right and Wakefield has it working, the knuckleball will do just that.
Then there's Johnny Damon, once revered in Boston. Now, he is booed every time he walks onto the field. Johnny was the centerfielder for the Red Sox when they won the 2004 World Series. He was part of the Duck Boat Parade celebrating the win. The fans gathered all along the route to chant his name and hold signs praising him. The fans couldn't believe he left the Red Sox, not only for more money but to their most notorious rival.
He is now the lead off hitter for New York. Wakefield and Damon know each other very well. They played together for years. It's anybody's guess who will win the battle of batter against pitcher. It's the kind of situation Shakespeare might have written about; good verses evil, and brother against brother. Some see it as a tragedy; others, a comedy.
It cannot be denied, that the Red Sox - Yankees baseball games are the height of excitement for all the fans. Even if you are obstructed behind a pole in Section 27 at Fenway Park or in the sweltering, sun cooked bleachers, your stomach does a flip flop at every pitch, hit or foul ball.
The BoSox fans have visions of a home run blasted over the Green Monster by Big Papi, or a grand slam from Manny. They dread the same thing from the Bronx Bomber's, ARod or Jeter. It makes for action packed drama.
The scalpers stand outside the gates on Yawkey Way selling stacks of tickets at exorbitant prices. It's a mystery how they manage to get hundreds of tickets when one adoring fan cannot purchase one at the box office. A whole week's pay could go for one bleacher ticket from a scalper.
No matter if you are rooting for the Yankee pinstripes or the Sox, you will not to be disappointed when the Yankees come to town this weekend. Some lucky fans will leave Fenway with foul balls caught during the game. All will leave thirsting for the next confrontation.

Post a CommentThe Bo Sox have played good baseball this year. The most surprising is probably Mike Lowell at 3rd base. He seems to have resurrected his career and is having a big year like he did for the Marlins a couple of years back. 2B Dustin Pedroia is also swinging a hot stick lately. It was unfortunate that Clemens return was delayed, I was looking foward to it. I dislike both the BoSox and the Yanks, but there's no doubt it's always a good series.
Just an update. Boston Red Sox, 2 out of 3. Not bad!
