How Do Those Sour Grapes Taste, McCain Campaign?

Carl Cameron Swallows the Palin Tales Fed by Bitter Campaign Staffers

The week prior to the election, anecdotes of contention within the McCain campaign in regards to Sarah Palin began trickling their way around the media. Fast-forward to a mere 24 hours after the Obama victory was declared, when Fox's Carl Cameron stood proudly before a row of cacti, and with eagerness resembling either a Pomeranian or a fashionable schoolgirl gossip (I can't figure out which), proclaimed to Bill O'Reilly that McCain staffers tipped him off about the nature of the factions.

What does it boil down to? According to Cameron's sources, the strife began when staffers noticed Palin's embarrassing lack of knowledge regarding basic world geography/foreign policy. "They began to discover that there were these gaps in her knowledge," Cameron reported, "things that insiders say she simply didn't know."

What were these "things?" Read on, and if you actually believe these are true, you may also be interested in some beachfront property in Antarctica.

Cameron dispelled, "There were real problems with basic civics, government structures, municipal, state and federal government responsibilities."

Claiming that Palin was ignorant regarding the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Cameron then said - with a straight face - "She wasn't able to name all the countries in North America, as part of that debate."

Becoming visibly more excited by the second, Cameron further revealed, "She didn't understand, McCain aides told me today, that Africa is a continent and not a country. And actually asked them, they say, if South Africa wasn't just part of the country, as opposed to a country within the continent."

But that's not all! Weirder tales then spilled from Cameron's mouth: of Palin excessively spending above and beyond the notoriously furnished clothing allowance, with $20,000 going to hubby Todd's wardrobe; of a "now infamous" incident whereupon she may or may not have greeted staffers at her hotel door in a bathrobe ("They thought that was rather...uncommon," Carl said with obvious pride for choosing his words carefully); and of course, of "tantrums" on the plane.

Are we done yet, Carl? Or do you need to keep going to ensure whatever award/accolades/D.C. cocktail party street cred you're looking for here?"And oh, listen!" Cameron panted on. He rounded out the report with the story of senior staffer Randy Scheunemann, who was quietly fired for making the strife public prior to the election in the first place.

So thank you, Carl Cameron, for buying this line of crap, not even considering that these people may be sour-grape-popping-liars, and most of all, for not salivating too heavily while you reported it as news. Sarah Palin has you to thank for putting a spear in the heart of her chances in 2012.

I missed this interview, but rarely pay much attention to such "hokey" reporting anyway. Whenever someone is disappointed with their own shortcomings, it always seems easier to try and hang the blame elsewhere. I am confident Sarah Palin will hold her head high and continue moving forward weathering this storm of ignoramus "Hollywood gossip" style reporting.

These folks chose Palin, warts and all. To dump on her now is beyond classless. Campaign people take losses badly, but anyone who knows politics knows McCain was thrown to the wolves as no one expected a Republican victory this year. That they chose the weakest running mate in a strong field (Hutchison, Collins, etc.) of women is their fault, not Palin's. She was not ready for the national stage and they kept her from the press, fueling worries about her capabilities. Now, rather than take heat for how they handled her, they are tearing her apart. If she is wise, she will simply not respond or it feeds into the image they created. There is plenty of governing left to do in Alaska.

Brook - I agree; I've been really ticked at how the mainstream media is trying to "Dan Quayle" Palin. Hopefully most people can see beyond their "reporting". You and I have both seen her in person and know how impressive she is. Let's hope that in 4 years from now, people will be ready for a change ...
