How to Throw a Bangin' New Years Eve Party!

Chris Yee
Appetizers are one of the most popular food choices for a New Year's Eve party and throwing a New Years Eve party requires a lot of work when considering which appetizers to choose. Unlike most parties which take place during meal time, New Years Eve parties take place much later in the evening. The difference in time can make it more difficult to plan a party. Because New Years Eve parties don't typically begin until 9 or after, it's too late to serve dinner but with guests staying until the late hours of the night they will be hungry. This is exactly why New Years Eves parties serve mainly appetizers, light food items like finger sandwiches and mini desserts. But what kind of appetizers should you choose? This article will provide some easy tips for throwing a fantastic New Years Eve party with simple food.

When you're deciding what kinds of appetizers to choose, the first rule of thumb is to consider how many guests are attending the party. A typical party may have four or five appetizers and finger foods per person. But considering the time and duration of a New Years Eve party, it is appropriate to have around twelve to fifteen appetizers per person. There is a lot of drinking involved and the lack of substantial food will require more appetizers. If you're hosting a large number of people, consider having at least five different types of appetizers, like finger sandwiches, dips, or some meat and cheese, so your guests are entertained and satisfied. But is it important to serve the appropriate appetizer to match the set-up of the party.

If you are providing chairs and tables, consider serving food that requires a utensil. But if you're hosting a smaller party or will not be providing seats, appetizers that can easily be eaten with your hands are more appropriate. Aside from taste, also think about how convenient the food is to eat. Some appetizers can be messy and may require lots of napkin, Buffalo wings for example. Others have a lot of dipping and different sauces involved. These food items may not be the best choice for a New Year Eve party where most of the guests dress up for such an occasion. Stick to food items that are not messy and are easy to eat. Your guests will appreciate you.

Lastly, serving both sweet and savory appetizers is a must. It provides more options throughout the night for your guests and give you time to prepare the more elaborate appetizers. You have the choice of offering the savory appetizers to wet your guests' palate and the sweet appetizers to top off the night. Whatever plan you choose, be sure to properly distribute the food. You don't want to run out of food too early or have too much at the end of the night. For example if you plan to offer sweet appetizers in the last hour or two of the party, you should or prepare less of these sweet appetizers than the savory appetizers.

If you're planning on hosting a New Years Eve party, appetizers should be the first to get on your to-do list. But before you choose what type of food to serve, you have to know how many people are coming, what kind of set-up you will have, and finally what kind different categories of appetizers to serve. With these simple helpful tips, you will no doubt throw a fantastic New Years Eve party!

Great advice, especially the calculations for how many appetizers are needed. I always buy too much food but I'd rather have that happen than to run out.
