How to Throw a Diary of a Wimpy Kid Party

Shannon Wilson
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books by Jeff Kinney are red hot. Pop into an elementary school classroom and at least one kid will probably have a copy of one of the books in their backpack (I know my kids do!). So if your Diary of a Wimpy Kid fan is having a birthday come up, why not make it a themed birthday by incorporating their birthday with the books they really love.

How to Throw a Diary of a Wimpy Kid Party #1: Decorations

A party isn't the same without decorations! These decoration items are easy and ones you can do yourself.

Wall decorations: Print out full printer paper size copies of all of the book covers. Hang them around the party room. To make them pop more, glue or tape the book covers on a sheet of poster board. That makes it an instant center piece to a room. Write HAPPY BIRTHDAY and the child's name at the top and bottom of the poster board.

Placemats: For placemats, print out more of the book covers mentioned above. Use poster board and cut them into rectangle placemat size. Laminate them so you can use them over and over again or the guests can take them home to enjoy.

Balloons: Balloons area great accent at a party. Buy balloons in the color of the covers of the book which are red, blue, yellow, green and orange (for the do it yourself book). Hang them in various areas around the room.

How to Throw a Diary of a Wimpy Kid Party #2: Party Favors

As shocking as it may seem, there really aren't official Diary of a Wimpy Kid favors (and there should be!) so you'll have to be craft and make some of your own as well as incorporate other favors into your theme.

Bookmarks: Luckily these are ones that you can actually order. There are humorous Diary of a Wimpy Kid bookmarks that help promote kids to read more. You can buy a set of one hundred from American Library Association (ALA) for $8.50.

You can also make your own bookmark by finding a picture you like online that is Diary of a Wimpy Kid themed, sizing it down and laminating it.

Pencils: Hand out pencils in red, blue, yellow, green and orange (the colors of the books). You can also go to a website that personalizes pencils (like the Oriental Trading Company) and have pencils personalized with "Diary of a Wimpy Kid."

"Journals:" Unless you have a big budget, you won't be able to afford to get all the kids at your party a journal (unless there are only a few kids) so opt for a notebook that you can glue or tape a picture of a Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book on it with the word diary or journal at the top or middle.

How to Throw a Diary of a Wimpy Kid Party #3: Games

On of the most memorable things about the books is...the cheese touch... A stinky old piece of cheese that no one will touch and if you do touch it no one will go near you until you pass the cheese touch onto someone else. Incorporate this into your games at the party. You can buy a sticker that has a picture of cheese (here) on it or use a post it and draw a picture of yucky moldy looking cheese on it. Sneak it onto the backs of party goers and see how long it takes before someone yells "Cheese touch!"

You can also buy a fake cheese wedge. Maukilo sells a wedge for $2.42. You can hide it around the party and whoever touches it has the cheese touch or you can give out goody bags and put the cheese in one of them. Make sure you write YOU HAVE THE CHEESE TOUCH! on the cheese so that they'll understand what to do (which is to pass it to someone else!).

You can also visit this page here for more game ideas (scroll to page four to start). Some of the suggestions are The Wimpy Kid trivia game, expert game, shame game, how well do you know your friend game and much more.

How to Throw a Diary of a Wimpy Kid Party #4: Food

The most important part of your food to have a Wimpy Kid theme is the cake. You can make a cake that looks like the cover of one of the books. You can view pictures of Wimpy Kid cakes here or you can grab a book and model it after that yourself.

The rest of the food isn't as important to have a theme. Just buy food that kids at that age like such as pizza, burgers, hot dogs, chips, etc.

Drinks: Have different drink choices available but another fun idea is to have red, green, blue and orange Kool-Aid which mimic the colors of the books.

The boys love the books and loved the movie too. I know they'd want the party too!
