How to Throw a Labor Day Party on a Budget

Linda M. McCloud

Labor Day is a great time to plan a party with your family and friends. Yet, with the economy the way it is many people may fear that they can't throw one this year. However, this doesn't have to be the case, if they plan correctly and wisely. In fact, many people can still throw a nice Labor Day party, while staying on a budget. Here are some tips on how to do this.

Step one: Plan How Much You Can Spend

Before you do anything else, you must decide what you can spend. Count up your bills. Calculate how much money you will have left after those bills. Will there be enough left to take out a small amount for a party? If there is, this is what you will call your budget for the party. Now remember you can't go over this amount.

Step two: Begin Planning Right Away

With pen and paper, begin planning what you will need for the party. Consider such things as: food, drinks, and supplies. Once you have your list made read it again. Did you go overboard? Are there things you can delete? Are there things you all ready have, especially in the supplies department? Are there things that others can bring? You don't have to be shy about asking others to bring food or supplies.

Think about it this way. If certain people enjoy making certain dishes, they may feel special if you ask them to bring that dish to the party.

Now go over your list again. Delete any more items that you can.

Step Three: Plan A Shopping List

Where can you get what items cheaper? Can you get some of the items cheaper at a certain grocery store or dollar store? Will you be at this store before the party anyway? If so, plan on buying these items, if they are not perishable.

Step Four: Look For Sales

Before the party, watch for sales on the items you need. Buy what you can on sale. Also don't forget about coupons.

Step Five: Shop

A couple days before the party, you have no choice but to purchase whatever is left on your list. Try to look for the best deals. Keep a close tab to your budget. Remember you can't go over it.

Step Six: Prepare For Your Party

Once you have your supplies it is time to prepare for the party. Cook, clean, etc. Once the chores are finished remember to have fun!

Labor Day is huge in Philadelphia! We have countless labor unions that march in a parade that goes from river to river. Then there is a big party at the IBEW Local 98 headquarters. Then it's back to school!

I don't think that I have ever seen a Labor Day party. I guess there is a party in just about everything if you get into the right mindset.
