How to Throw a Punch

Chris Ware
Lots of people have been in a fight at one time in their life. The truth is that unless they were trained in how to fight they may have easily hurt themselves worse then they could hurt the other person. I am not condoning violence but if you wish to protect yourself if you wish to learn how to box or participate in any other martial arts there are things you need to learn before ever throwing a first punch. If you do not learn how to punch properly it could be you in the hospital and not the other guy. In this article I will teach you what I have taught others before. I will teach you how to punch without hurting yourself.

The first thing that you will have to learn to do is how to make a fist. This may seem very simple but many people naturally do this wrong and the way they make a fist could hurt themselves badly. You can easily sprain your hand or even break a bone if you do not make a fist the proper way. Often people will put their thumb inside of their hand. This is the wrong way to make a fist and you are very likely to hurt yourself if you do this. You should make a fist with your thumb resting on top of the pointer finger. This may not seem as natural but it is the safest way to make a fist.

The next big mistake that people do when throwing a punch that could seriously hurt them is to aim their punch right where they want to hit. Doing this can seriously injury yourself. When you are throwing a punch you will actually want to punch past your intended target. This not only gives you force going through the punch but it keeps you from hurting yourself. If you aim directly at a spot it is like hitting a brick wall. So imagine when you throw a punch that you are punching a few inches past where you want to punch to get the most force and to keep from hurting yourself.

The final mistake that is common to see is not throwing your punch straight. This is not as likely to get you hurt as the other problems but you do leave yourself more prone to getting hurt this way. You will get more force by going straight. By hooking or moving the arm any more then is necessary you are losing power and force. You also open yourself up more to counterattack and weaken the arms so they are more susceptible to being injured.

These are some of the most common mistakes that are made. These mistakes not only make your punch weaker but they also can get you seriously hurt. You should not try to fight unless you have to in self-defense, or for sport after you are properly trained.
