The basic ingredients for a successful party are entrées, drinks, and good conversation. You do not have to have an elaborate theme for your party. You can choose a very simple and delicate theme, a budget oriented theme, and still pull off a party that your friends will forever talk about. For example, let's say that you want to throw a party during the summer months. You could hold your party in the backyard and your theme could be as simple as balloons, streamers, and crepe paper. Or, you could choose a more elaborate theme to include party hats and accessories.
If you are going to hold your party in the backyard you want to remember to be respectful of your neighbors and not have loud music blaring throughout the night into the wee hours of the morning.
You need to decide whether or not you need a seating plan, if you are going to have tables set up around the backyard for people to sit down at, just chairs scattered around the backyard, or if your party is going to be a "standing only" type of party.
If you are going to use tables you will also probably need table coverings that fit in with your party theme. The easiest table covering would be paper tablecloths that you can dispose of at the end of the party. They are easier than using fabric tablecloths that would need to be washed and dried after use.
Now for the food and drinks, you will need to decide whether the food is going to consist of something simple such as a variety of chips and dips, or if you plan on serving cooked finger foods. Serving cooked finger foods does not have to be a tedious process where you have to make everything from scratch. You can go to your local grocery store in the frozen foods section and find quick and easy ready-to-eat entrees such as potato skins, Buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks, and pizza rolls.
As for the drinks you will be serving, you need to decide whether your party is going to have alcoholic or non alcoholic drinks. Regardless of whether or not your party is going to have alcohol, you will still need to make enough room in your refrigerator to accommodate the drinks, or make sure you have plenty of coolers filled with ice to keep the drinks chilled.
Once all of your planning and preparation has been completed, and the food has been put out for consumption, you are ready for your guests to start arriving. The rest of the night can be spent relaxing and mingling with your guests.
