How to Thwart Insomnia

The literal sense of insomnia from a dictionary is a state where you are not able to sleep or someone who cannot sleep easily. Adequate sleep is very important for a healthy life. Many of us, find it very difficult to get sound sleep. It is not advisable to take sleeping pills all the time. As, intake of sleeping pills can prove to be dangerous. Experts say that, proper diet and exercise can solve the problem.

There is no particular food as such which can straight put you to sleep. But, including certain types of food in our diet can help induce sleep. You can have food that contains carbohydrates like fruits, pasta, oatmeal and brown rice. These foods produce a sleep inducing hormone called serotonin in the body.

Another hormone melatonin also induces sleep and foods which contain this hormone are bananas, plums, ginger, rice, sweet corn and others. A glass of milk is suggested before you go to sleep, as it contains tryptophan an amino acid which is said to promote sleep.

Consumption of certain foods in the night has to avoided. For example, avoid intake of food which contains stimulants like cheese, chocolates, tomatoes, wine, spinach, sugar and so on. It is suggested that you have a light dinner. Try as much as possible to have your dinner at least 2-3 hours before you to bed. You must also avoid taking in spicy and acidic food.

Now, coming to the exercises part of it, it is proven that exercises can help to get good sleep. You can do moderate aerobic exercises to get good sleep. As aerobic exercises can increase the amount of oxygen, that reaches the blood, which is important to get sound sleep. Even vigorous exercises during the day and mild exercise in the evening can do the job for you. If you know yoga, then nothing like it, do your asanas, including yoga nidra to solve the problem.

After dinner if possible just go for a short leisure walk.

So, insomnia is not an ongoing problem that cannot be resolved at all or something that can be solved only with medication. Just have the right food at the right time. And do some simple exercises to get good sleep. Having the right food and doing the right exercise does not have any side effects and will give you a permanent solution.
