How to Tie a Bowline Knot

Ohio22
The bowline is a very easy knot to and can be very useful in several situations. One use is to make a loop at the end of a rope or to secure a rope to a pole. Variations of the bowline such as the double bowline are often used by climbers to secure the end of the rope to their climbing harness. Another common use is to secure lines on a sailboat or to hold down light aircraft. If you were ever a boy scout it is likely that you already know how to tie the bowline but for those who never had the chance to learn, here is a step by step guide.

Before you can tie a bowline you must find a piece of rope suitable for tying knots. Nylon rope is easy to tie knots with but any piece of spare rope you find lying around can work. For best results, make sure the rope is at least a foot or two long but not more than a few feet because this could make tying difficult.

To begin make a small overhand loop several inches from the bottom of the rope. Hold the loop in your left hand and then bring the rope up through the loop with your right hand. Then, still with your right hand, bring the rope behind the portion of the rope above the loop, and back down through the loop. Tighten the bowline by pulling the standing part away from the loop. Of course if you are left handed you can reverse the hands used.

Do not be discouraged if you are not able to tie it on your first try. If the knot does not turn out and you think you tied it correctly, then it is likely that you did not tighten it correctly. The knot can easily be ruined when attempting to tighten it. Keep practicing and you will be able to reap the benefits of the bowline in no time!
