How to Tile Over Tile

If you are going to lay a tile floor down in a room that already has tile in it, you have two options. One, you can remove the existing tile, prep the floor and then proceed or two, you can, with a bit of preparation, tile over the existing floor tiles. If choosing the latter, here is what you will need to do.

One: Before you begin, determine if your sub flooring is going to be able to withstand the added weight of tile on top of tile.

Two: If you have determined that your sub flooring is able to withstand the permanent weight adjustment of new tile on top of existing tile, you can now begin checking the existing floor tiles carefully to make sure all pieces are firmly adhering to the floor. This is important because you do not want to place new tile over loose tiles or the new tiles stand a very good chance of becoming loose as well and it will be harder to readhere both layers once the new job is complete.

Three: Carefully inspect your existing tile and grout for cracks. If there are none you can proceed to the next step. If cracks do indeed exist you need to determine if the damage is to the tile itself or caused by a faulty flooring or underlayment beneath the tile. If it is the latter, you may want to consider removing tile and repairing what needs to be done underneath before moving to the next step. If you are uncertain at this point, contact a professional versed in tile installation.

Four: Now is the time to reapply any loose tiles you found in step two. If they are wobbling or loose, pry them up and reapply adhesive to the back to reinstall. Allow to dry completely before proceeding to step four. This is an important step because if you do not fix the problem that exists, it will most likely recur at a later date. Remove all old adhesive and allow to dry before applying a new layer for the replacement tile.

Five: Clean the existing floor very well and allow to dry completely. It is important that you not skip doing either of these things. Do a through cleaning and drying before moving along to your next step.

Six: Purchase or rent a belt sander to run over the entire surface of the floor. This will roughen up the existing tiles so that your new application will be a success. Be sure to wear a dust mask, safety goggles and ear protection while you are sanding.

Seven: If your tile is not at a level surface because of grooves or dips in the existing grout, add grout to the recesses to bring them up to level. Allow to dry completely before placing new tiles down. Do not use grout for the tiles sitting next to the walls. These will be better filled with caulk

Eight: Check the manufacturer's instructions on your new tile to see if a coat of prime needs to be added to existing tile before proceeding. If so, apply prime and allow to dry completely in a well ventilated area before proceeding.

Nine: You are now ready to lay your tiles. To better ensure proper fitting, remove any doors that are hanging. This will also make it easier for you to shave the bottom of them if it becomes necessary to do so once your new layer of tile is placed on top of the existing tile because it will probably be quite a bit higher than it was before.

You are now ready to install your new tiles. Be sure to follow all manufacturers instructions and to wear the proper safety gear. Tile offers an extremely resilient and beautiful way to remodel any room. With a little time, planning and care of installation, you are well on your way to a brand new look for any room.
