One interesting project can involve the entire family, and can be a rewarding part of any family gathering, such as a holiday when everyone is together. Whether the time-capsule is discussed amongst all present on that day or tucked away secretly for an opening at some later date, children, adults, and the elderly alike will enjoy a "who we are and what we are like today" of their likes and dislikes, interests, favorites, wishes and goals. An effective method for this project is to print however many copies you may need, however long and detailed you prefer, of a "fill-in-the-blank" form. You may not think that such "little things" as your favorite song or what you hope your life will be like in ten years are significant, but years or decades down the line you will see looking back at 2007 to be something to reflect upon, and the generations following you will appreciate it even more.
Don't forget pictures! Any and all are good, but those from a specific family gathering will be cherished by your grandchildren and theirs-- "The Smith Family Christmas, 2007" in candid photographs is something irreplaceable.
If possible, prodding the elderly folks to write a letter or short note to the generations of the future is a beautiful bit of personal history. (Although tape-recordings are also considered, their durability is questionable-- especially if kept in a time-capsule for a number of decades.) For children and adults alike, being able to read "something from Great-grandpa" will be a priceless experience.
The Jewish tradition known as an Ethical Will can be utilized regardless of your personal religious beliefs, but this project is best done when one has time alone for serious contemplation. Traditionally, an Ethical Will was a thoughtfully-considered message from a father to his son, "bequeathing" his values, beliefs and ideals; but it can be equally appropriate for any adult to prepare for his or her children. It is not necessary to study books or acquire the services of popular "legacy advisors;" a person's own heart and mind has plenty within to pass on to his or her descendants. Written with sincerity, such a document is a wonderful gift.
The completed time-capsule can be given to a family member for safekeeping. It should be clearly labeled, including the date when it is to be opened, preferably in a weatherproof container such as a metal strongbox. Its purpose-- to prepare and share good memories!
