How Time Flies: Looking Back on Life

Alicia Suenaga
Time does fly. This will not explain scientifically how it does, but when was the last time you heard -or said- any of the following?

When I was your age, we walked a mile to school every day, and it was all uphill. It was all uphill on the way back, too.

When I was your age, the tooth fairy left dimes.

When I was your age, we did all our math with pencils and paper, not calculators.

When I was your age, we listened to real music, not this noisy garbage.

When I was your age, we had bacon and eggs for breakfast every morning.

When I was your age, we had meat and potatoes for dinner every night.

When I was your age, exercise bikes were for fat people.

When I was your age, t.v. remote controls were for old people, so they wouldn't have to get up and walk across the room to change the channel.

When I was your age, garage door openers were for old people, so they wouldn't have to lift their heavy garage doors.

When I was your age, electric toothbrushes were for old people, so they wouldn't have to work so hard to brush their teeth.

When I was your age, whirlpool baths were for old people, to soothe their aching bones and joints.

Fast forward. Some of the changes in life are for the better. Life without a remote control is hard to imagine for many. The importance of a balanced diet and regular exercise are better understood than they used to be.

There is always room for improvement, as the teachers in that faraway school said. How long do you think it will be until you hear or say any of the following?

When I was your age, we measured weight in pounds and ounces, height in feet and inches.

When I was your age, there were joggers running down the streets with their elbows flying up behind their ears.

When I was your age, we couldn't take tweezers or tubes of toothpaste on airplanes.

When I was your age, the only kind of fuel we used for our cars was gasoline.

When I was your age, people could graduate from high school without being able to read.

When I was your age, there were only two political parties whose candidates stood any chance of winning elections.

When I was your age, the rich were getting richer at the expense of the poor.
