How to Use Time Management to Improve Your Life

Basically time management is about being focused. The Pareto Principle which is also known as the "80:20 Rule" says that 80% of efforts that are not time managed or are unfocused only generate 20% of the desired output for that particular effort. But, if 80% of the desired output can be generated by using only 20% of time effort, then this is more desireable and allows you to get more done. One thing to keep in mind is that this rule is only used to put emphasis on how much time can be gained when you practice good time management.

Many individuals see time management as a list of rules that involves the scheduling of appointments, thorough planning, goal setting, creating to do lists and prioritizing. While these are the core basics of managing your time, they should be understood in order to develop efficient personal time management. These basic skills can then be fine tuned to include finer points of each skill that will then give you that extra reserve so that you can have the results you want.

However, there are more skills involved in managing your time than just the core basics. You will have to practice skills such as decision making, and work towards having if you don't already inherent abilities like emotional intelligence, and critical thinking as these are all essential to your personal growth.

The reality is that personal time management involves everything you do every day. No matter how big or small a task is, everything you do counts. Every piece of new knowledge that you acquire, each new skill you develop, and every new advice you consider should all be taken into consideration.

One of the big things about time management is that it is very important to have a balanced life-style since this is key in having results you are happy with when it comes to managing your time.

Having good time management results is not about being busy. All you have to do is think about the hours we mindlessly search the internet or how we check our e-mail twenty times a day when probably two or three times a day would be sufficient and you can see what I mean.

There are six areas that practicing good time management seeks to improve and those areas are physical, social, intellectual, career, spiritual and finally emotional.

Making sure that you thoroughly plan and have a set of things to do on your list for each of these key areas is not very practical. However, determining which areas of your life are not being given the appropriate amount of attention is a big part of managing your time effectively. Each of the different areas create a more whole you, and if you are ignoring even one of them then you're ignoring an important part of yourself.

There is no reason that personal time management should have to be a daunting task. Instead it can be a very reasonable approach to solving all your problems big and small.

Here are several basic activities that you can perform in order to learn time management and improve your personal life.

1. Review your long and short term goals often. Keep a list and keep it handy!

2. Before doing anything, determine which tasks are necessary or not necessary in order to complete your goals. Also figure out which tasks are helping you to maintain a balanced life style.

3. Everybody has peak times when they are at their best for completing tasks, and times when they slow down, these peaks and slow down times are our natural cycles. We should be able to determine when to do our most difficult tasks when we are at one of our peak times.

4. Learn how to tell people no. You'll need to learn to say it, even when it is a loved one doing the asking.

5. Reward yourself when you manage your time effectively and see good results.

6. Work towards getting those around you who are benefiting from your time management skills to support your efforts.

7. Try not to procrastinate. I realize this is difficult, but it is best if you take care of necessary tasks immediately.

8. Keep a record or journal of all your activities. This will help you to keep things in their proper perspective.

Taking these first steps towards time management that is effective and gives you results will help you to become a well rounded person. Personal time management is the art and science of working towards building a better life for you.

From the first moment that you begin integrating time management skills into your life, you have opened several pathways that can provide a multitude of solutions to your personal growth. It also helps to create opportunities.
