How to Make a Tippi Hedren from 'The Birds' Costume

Released in 1963, The Birds is one of director Alfred Hitchcock's most well-known and creepiest horror/suspense movies. In The Birds, Tippi Hedren plays the role of wealthy socialite, prankster, and newspaper heiress Melanie Daniels, who follows attorney Mitch Brenner (played by Rod Taylor) to his family home in Bodega Bay. After her arrival the birds in Bodega Bay seem to be acting strangely. Seagulls deliberately attack people and a home is invaded by a small army of swifts through the chimney. The local chickens display odd behavior as birds perched around town glare at the townspeople menacingly. The bird attacks become more horrific as the body count rises. Birds even attack children at a birthday party, but no one understands why this is happening. The film contains a famous and memorable scene: Melanie, bloodied in her proper dress and jacket combo, being pecked at by a number of really angry birds.

The attack scene featuring Tippi Hedren is the inspiration for many The Birds Halloween costumes or attire for costume parties. While there are pre-made costumes available, it may be cheaper and more fun to put together your own The Birds costume. Tippi Hedren wore a green sheath dress with a matching jacket. These were popular during the 1960s and can sometimes be found in vintage stores or thrift stores. While green would be truly authentic, another pale colored outfit in a similar style can be worn. Accessorize with a small strand of pearls, gray or black pumps, sheer stockings, and a cigarette case. If you already have blonde hair, style it into a french twist or purchase a 60s inspired wig in a similar style. Mess up your hair to give it the effect of "These birds are trying to kill me!" For make-up, wear a nude shade of eyeshadow with lots of mascara and red lipstick, which you can smudge for a distressed look.

You'll need a few birds, of course. Craft birds can be found at hobby stores or purchased where Halloween costumes are being sold, since ravens are a popular Halloween decoration. You'll want to get several ravens, crows, or other black birds. Most craft birds found in the floral department come with small wires that can be pushed through and sewn down inside the jacket to hold them in place. Position the birds on the shoulders, arms, and the front of the dress. Don't forget to pin a bird in your hair, and to make it look like the birds have just pulled out your hair glue a few strands to one of the birds on the shoulders. Cut random holes throughout the outfit, including your pantyhose. Apply costume or fake blood on the holes and on your skin. Have fun and Happy Halloween!
