How to Make Tissue Paper Poinsettias

It is already the holiday season and that means it is time to get busy working on special holiday craft projects. I am always looking for projects that children will have a great time working on. Making tissue paper poinsettias is the perfect project to do with children. This project only requires a few very inexpensive items that can be purchased locally or you can find all you need by shopping here.

You will want to work on this project in an open area where you have plenty of space. A kitchen or dining room table would be the perfect place to set up and get prepared. Divide your area and make sure everyone has a comfortable space. Good lighting and a comfortable chair are also very important. Here is everything you will need to make your very open tissue paper poinsettias.

Items Needed For Tissue Paper Poinsettias
1. A package of red tissue paper
2. A package of green tissue paper
3. A package of green pipe cleaners
4. Glue
5. Scissors

Getting Started
The first thing you will want to do is open up your package of red tissue paper and lay it flat on your table. Keep the paper stacked but do unfold it. If it is a thick stack that will be hard to cut, you may want to divide it in to two separate stacks. Use your scissors and cut equally sized squares of tissue paper. Cut several stacks so that you will be able to make at least a few flowers.

Open your second package of green tissue paper and lay it out on your table. Unfold it just as you did with the red paper but keep it stacked. Use your scissors to cut long strips of paper approximately three inches wide. Once you have your tissue paper all cut and stacked, you will want to put the green aside and pick up your stacks of red tissue paper.

Stack enough squares of red tissue paper to create the poinsettia flower. After you stack all the sheets of paper, you will want to pick up one of your pipe cleaners and poke it through the center of the stack. Poke it through just enough to bend the end of the pipe cleaner so that it will hold the flower in place. Use your fingers to hold the flower at that end and give the long end of the pipe cleaner a full twist to hold the flower firmly at the top.

Finishing Paper Poinsettia
Set your flower aside and pick up your strips of green paper. Twist from the center out until you have about two thick inches at each end. This will be your stem and leaves. Loop the stem around your pipe cleaner and use a little glue to hold it firmly in place.

Bend and manipulate your pipe cleaner so that it will also help to keep the stem and leaves just as you want them. You can use just a drop of glue to pinch together and hold layers of tissue paper. This will give the leaves a beautiful look.

You will want to now hold the flower and use your fingers to fan out the layers of red tissue paper. Carefully pull and twist the paper till you have a very full circle of red leaves. Your poinsettia flower should look perfectly beautiful and all you need to do now is decide where it should go. You might want to display it in a simple vase. You can also make several tissue paper poinsettias and string them together for garland.
