How to Make Toast in the Oven

Pat Lunsford
Is your toaster on the fritz? It's a real bummer when you need toast and the toaster isn't working. Have no fear. Toast can be made even better in the oven. Turn the oven to broil and raise the rack to the highest level.

On a flat pan such as a cookie sheet, put the bread side by side and slide it into the oven beneath the broiler. Close the door but keep a close watch on it. Toast can burn quickly under the broiler. When the bread has browned to your liking, pull the pan out and turn each piece over. Slide it back into the oven and brown the other side. That's all there is to it.

However, you may prefer to toast one side only which makes it crispy on one side and soft on the other. This makes great sandwiches. There is also the advantage of pre-buttering the bread. Spread butter over the bread and slide it into the oven.

Garlic Toast

Butter each slice of bread and sprinkle with garlic powder or garlic salt and toast. If you prefer crispier toast, turn them over and put them back into the oven until the other side is golden brown.

Cinnamon Toast

Mix equal parts of cinnamon and granulated sugar. Butter each slice of bread then sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture over the buttered bread and slide it into the oven until toasted to your liking. Cinnamon toast can surely brighten up your morning. You can also add raisins. Simply sprinkle a few raisins over the buttered bread then sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture and toast it.

This can be done with any kind of sliced bread such as bagels or English muffins. Why buy cinnamon bagels when you can make your own, nice and hot from your own oven?

Butter each half of the bagel or English muffin and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture then slide it into the oven and toast it the way you like it. Don't forget the raisins!

So go ahead and get creative. You can have any kind of toast you want straight from the oven. Who needs a toaster? You can't make buttered toast in a toaster. You can't make cinnamon bagels in a toaster. You can't toast on one side in a toaster.

Well, they are convenient when you're in a hurry so you might as well get another one. You may need it again someday. Meanwhile, enjoy your oven-cooked toast!
