How to Make a Toddler Friendly Learning Center for Your Homeschool

Mrs. Renee

If you have a toddler in your home, you probably already know how difficult homeschooling can be. If you have a young toddler running around, it can be very difficult to keep them occupied while working with the others. So the solution that really seemed to work in our house is building a fun toddler friendly learning center. It is pretty simple to build, and arrange for your toddler. Below are a few ideas on how you can create one yourself.

First you will need to figure out where you want to create the area. Measure the space, so that you know what you are working with. If you have any woodworking skills, you may be able to build it yourself. You can pick up some wood from your local home depot, and look online for instructions on how you can build a toddler size book shelf. Or if you are not handy with wood, then you can visit your local garage sales or, you're local Wal-Mart. Look for a small book shelf that can hold several storage bins, and toddler friendly games. You will only need one to two toddler friendly games at the most. The storage bins should be big enough to hold hand size toys, and easy enough for your kids to get in, and out of it.

If you get a used shelf from a garage sale, than you will want to take the time and sand it down, and finish it. This will help to make sure that your child does not hurt themselves on splinted wood. I would recommend that you do this before you even bring it in the house. You can even paint it with some fun colors that will personalize it a bit for your child. To keep the toys covered when you are not using them, you can hang a pole on the top half, and put up some small curtains. The curtains can blend in with the rest of the room, or you can just use material that you have lying around the house to make the small size curtains yourself. If you have more toys than what actually fits on the shelf, then you can switch them up each week. This helps to keep the learning center exciting and fun for your children. Remember that you don't have to purchase the entire learning center, you can always do an internet search and create your own learning center games that are just right for your toddler.
