How Traditional Marriage Benefits Society

Brenda Hoffman
Traditional marriage has an overwhelming number of benefits to society. Many of these benefits have been well documented. They would not be the same if marriage were altered in any way though.Longer, Healthier Lives

Studies have shown that married people live longer, happier lives. They have fewer heart attacks, fewer problems with alcohol, don't behave in really risky ways and are wealthier than single people.

Lower Mortality Rates

There have been studies done that reveal that "mortality rates are 50% higher for unmarried women and 250% higher for unmarried men than they are for married women and men." This same study also went on to show that 9 out of 10 men made it to the age of 65 while only 6 out of 10 bachelors actually made it to the usual age of retirement.

The mortality rates for homosexual men are actually much higher. One study took a look at the homosexual community in Vancouver, Canada. It showed that "Life expectancy at age 20 years for gay and bisexual men is 8 to 20 years less than for all men."

Physical Security For Women

Another study that was done took a look at the physical security that marriage offers women. While there are some people who would like you to think that marriage facilitates the oppression and suppression of women, this is not the case at all. In fact, spousal abuse is not the real reason for domestic abuse.

The U.S. Department of Justice conducted the National Crime Victimization Survey, which took a look all of the violent crimes that took place between domestic partners (male/female) from 1979 till 1987. It found that boyfriends and ex-husbands are the ones who commit the majority of these crimes.

This same study continued on to say that 20% of women report that their partner has assaulted them. However, husbands who are currently living with their wives only committed 9% of these crimes. Such evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that whenever women are unmarried, they are at much higher risk of suffering domestic abuse.

Lower Rates Of Physical Abuse

There is a 46% rate of physical abuse taking place amongst men who are in homosexual relationships. This is at a rate of 35.4% amongst lesbian women. Since same sex marriage would only exist in name and not contain any of the other essential defining elements, there is no reason to believe that it would stop this high rate of domestic abuse amongst same sex couples.
