If you are currently training in martial arts or even some kind of security training you may be interested in training with a grappling dummy. A grappling dummy can be a great investment for your training as there are several benefits that come along with this type of training. Some people may question why you would need a grappling dummy and just not get a real human partner. There are certain benefits to training with a grappling dummy that doesn't always come from training with a human partner. Also, with your own dummy you can easily train when you want whenever you want so that you don't need to wait till class to practice one of your moves.

Benefits of Training with a Grappling Dummy

The number one benefit to training with a grappling dummy is that you create muscle memory. This can't always be done with a human partner. With a grappling dummy you practice your moves over and over which creates muscle memory, which is the best way to improve your skills. With a grappling dummy you can easily do a move 50 times in a row to create that muscle memory but with a real human partner that may not be possible. The more times you practice a move the easier and faster the move becomes.

Another benefit is that you can have your very own grappling dummy that you can use whenever you please. This means that you don't have to wait until your training class to be able to practice your moves. You can actually get ahead of the people in your class by practicing on your own time with your grappling dummy.

Tips for Training with a Grappling Dummy

Depending on what you are training for, be it mixed martial arts or training for the police academy, you will use your grappling dummy differently. Although every person is going to use their training partner differently, there are some things to keep in mind when training with a grappling dummy so you get the most out of your practice training.

The first thing to remember is the more repetitions the better. This means that you shouldn't just simply move from one move to another when training with a grappling dummy. Instead concentrate on one or two moves at a time and do these moves over and over. It's not a bad idea to choose one move you want to perfect and do it over and over at least 50 times with the dummy. Just be sure that you are not getting sloppy with your technique and you are performing the move correctly. If you perform the move incorrectly your muscle memory will actually hinder your performance as you will continue to do the move incorrectly.

Your training should also include real human training partners. If you really want to perfect your skill you need to make sure that the grappling dummy is not the only partner you have. You still need to have training partners so that you can get used to real life experience against another opponent. Think about a grappling dummy the same way as a boxer uses a punching bag. A grappling dummy should just be used in conjunction with your training partner and classes. It's just like learning any other skill, you need to practice and this involves practicing on your own.

Lastly, don't only use the grappling dummy for offensive moves. You can also perform defensive moves and position by placing yourself in the position with the dummy. This gives you the option to practice getting out of these holds like different leg holds and reverse holds. You can also use this time to look at different tactics you have to get out of these holds. With a training partner you don't have the time to look at different tactics as you are too busy sparring and it's too rushed. A grappling dummy gives you a new perspective on defensive holds and allows you to experiment a little bit more.

Training with a grappling dummy can be very beneficial for people who are serious about their sport or training. There are many benefits when training is done correctly and efficiently. The most important thing to remember when learning how to train with a grappling dummy is to learn repetition is the best way to go for the most effective training with this instrument.
