How to Train a Puppy to Use the Doggy Door

Bandit
Training a puppy to use the doggy door takes patience and just a little time. Once your puppy has learned this, you will have a better piece of mind knowing that when you are away from home, there will be no accidents done inside your home. Training a puppy and or older dog to use a doggy door means that you will not have to get up out of bed at 3am anymore. Here is how to train your puppy to use the doggy door. It is very easy to do.

There are two different types of doggy doors that you can use. The first one fits into the wall, and the second one is for the sliding glass door. Both of these come in different sizes to fit the smaller to larger breed dogs. Be sure to measure your dog and get the correct size doggy door, which will be appropriate for your breed of dog.
Whatever type of doggy door you choose will make life easier and less stressful on your whole family. Your dog will even be happier knowing that he can go outside anytime he wants. You and your entire family will love how convenient it is to have a doggy door.

The flaps that are on a doggy door will scare your puppy the first time you place him through the doggy door because of the loud banging noise that the flaps make when they close. Getting your puppy accustomed to the noise and letting him know that it is okay and will not hurt him is the first task to undertake. To accustom you puppy to the banging noise of the doggy door when the flaps shut, take your puppy over to the doggy door and push the door up and then let the flap fall back down and reassure your puppy that it is okay and that this will not hurt him. Lift the flap of the doggy door up several times and just let it fall back down on its own and make sure your puppy sits right beside you and hears and see this all going on. It is his new way to go outside.

This is how my Mom and I trained my nephew's dog Tex to use his doggy dog and within that first week, he was trained. Even though Tex did not stay here everyday with my Mom, we still had him doggy door trained within a few days time.

Training a puppy to use a doggy door is a two-person job. If you use a friend's dog to help training all this usually does is scare the puppy even more. What you do is have either a relative or friend come over everyday to your house and one person stays inside the house and the other goes outside and goes to the doggy door. The person indoors needs to gently push the puppy or dog through the doggy door and then the other person outside needs to push the puppy or dog back through the doggy door. Each time the puppy is pushed through the doggy door, tell him what a good boy he is. Do this a few times to see if they get the idea of what you want them to do. During one of the times you push your puppy through the doggy door leave him out there for a little while and then coax him back inside by lifting the flap up on the doggy door a little to show your dog this is the way for him that he gets back inside of the house.

Each time your puppy needs to go outside to do his business, push him through the doggy door and then go outside with him and then once he does his stuff outside push him back through the doggy door to get him back in. It does not take a rocket scientist to train a puppy to use a doggy door. It will only take a few days to train your puppy. Dogs are very smart creatures. Use the above training method everyday and stick to it and within a week's time, your puppy will be using the doggy dog all by himself. If you have an indoor cat, the cat will be getting outside via the doggy door so if you do not want your cat to get outside then installing a doggy door is useless. Keep in mind that if you do install a doggy door, that other creatures of the night will make visits inside your home by using the doggy door. We cover the doggy door up at night to prevent any wild animals from coming in the house during the night.

I'd love to have a doggy door! But I'm always afraid that a skunk or raccoon will come through it!
