How to Train to Be an Ultimate Fighter

What does it take to become an ultimate fighter? It takes everything. A true ultimate fighter is well rounded in all fighting skills. Mixed martial arts (MMA) includes karate, boxing, kickboxing, jiu jitsu, wrestling, and other martial arts styles. A good fighter comes prepared with the best defense and strong offense. He can take a punch to the head and a kick to the ribs and STILL bounce back to deliver the same damage in return.

A true fighter trains hard without complaint or distractions. He is mentally motivated and totally focused. He is prepared to spend long hours away from his family and able to refrain from the social peer pressure of non-fighting friends.

The ultimate fighter lives for the intense adrenaline-rushed moments of the cage and comes with a plan. He knows what moves to make and which moves can get him caught by his opponent.

With mixed martial arts becoming more and more popular every year; thousands of men and women have converted their original passion for martial arts into a desire to take it to the next level with MMA, in hopes of becoming ultimate fighters.

Success as an ultimate fighter begins with intense training. Training includes stamina and strength training, a strict diet and nutrition regime, and the development of a fighter's mental skills.

Before starting such an intense training routine, make sure you have seen your doctor and have been cleared to participate in such strenuous activity. Begin with a purpose; what do you want to improve, change, and accomplish? Be ready to hurt. Ultimate fighters are not built overnight. You will have to endure many drills to increase stamina and improve physical conditioning, and you will have to do a lot of weight training to build strength. Common drills include, heavy bag training, interval running, mountain climbing, tire rolling, and running in place.

One of the best training exercises you can utilize is the opportunities that sparring will give you to prepare yourself both physically and mentally for a fight. Sparring gives you a chance to measure your skills against another and conquer all the nervous energy you will have. Incorporating a variety of exercises into your training and integrating several fighting forms into your own style is essential to optimize your performance.

After you have built up some confidence and skill with training and sparring, it would help to get some small contests under your belt for experience.

When it comes to diet and nutrition, we're all going to have different needs and goals. Keep in mind, your own nutritional needs may even change depending on what goal you want to achieve. Some fights may require you to lose a little weight and other times you may be looking to gain some muscle. If possible, seek out advice from a nutritionist to decide what's best for you at the time.

And last words of advice for the eager beavers fighters in the gym; don't forget that injuries are way more common during the training sessions than in actual fights! Make an honest effort to minimize injuries that can seriously put the brakes on your performance. Keep all aspects of training in proper balance; don't neglect any area of your training. A lot of fighters neglect flexibility and speed training while they overtrain in strength and stamina. It's all about training smart and maintaining balance. Be educated. Fight smart and think strategy!
