How to Transfer Your Home Number to Your Cell Phone

The Benefits of the Call Forwarding Feature and How to Use It

Sonya Arnold
Transferring a land line telephone to a cell phone is easy, cheap and very useful! This feature is called "call forwarding" and every telephone company allows you to use this feature for a fairly low cost. Cell phone use has been on the rise for years and while there are many people who rarely use their home telephones, they are a long way from becoming obsolete. Call forwarding is a good way to link your home or business telephone to your cell phone, keeping you connected wherever you may be.

There are quite a few good reasons that one may want to transfer their home telephone to their cell phone. For example, while cell phones are convenient, most of us would like for them to remain somewhat private. Our home telephone numbers, on the other hand, can be made available to the public in the white pages, allowing anyone to connect with you. Schools, for example, are also more likely to call your home rather than your cell phone. With the call forwarding feature, parents can be in the loop while on the go. Small business owners may benefit greatly from the call forwarding feature as well. Call forwarding allows you to step away from your work, yet never miss a call. Clients will be relieved to hear your voice instead of an answering machine!

Yet another benefit of call forwarding is that the feature allows you to screen the calls that are forwarded to your cell phone as long as your cell phone has the caller-ID option. You are able to know who is calling and choose whether or not you will answer the call. This is a great way to save precious cell phone minutes. If you choose not to answer the call, it will be forwarded to your cell phone voice mail box. It is amazing how easy it is to never miss a single telephone call again.

Here is a step-by-step guide to transferring your land line telephone to your cell phone:
Step 1: Pick up your land line receiver
Step 2: Dial *72 and wait for the tone
Step 3: Dial the telephone number that you want your calls to be forwarded to (in this case, your cell phone number)
Step 4: Your cell phone (or whatever number you may be forwarding to) will ring. You may either pick up the call or not, it makes no difference. As soon as you hear the cell phone ring, your calls are successfully transferred!

***To switch off the call forwarding feature, just pick up the land line telephone and dial *73, when you hear the beeps, it is switched off. It's just that simple!

Remember: While these steps work with Verizon and most other telephone companies, your phone company may employ a different procedure. If these steps don't work for you, please check with your telephone service provider.
