How to Transfer VHS Tapes to DVD Using a DVD Recorder

A Guide to Convert VHS to DVD

The Armchair Geek
A DVD recorder is a video device designed to record DVD without the use of a computer. DVD recorders will usually record from analog sources such as VHS players or older video cameras. You cannot, however, record copy-protected tapes.

A disadvantage of DVD recorders is that they have limited editing capability. This tutorial will walk you through the process of transferring your VHS tapes to DVD using a DVD recorder. After reading this article, you will able to transfer your precious wedding or graduation tapes to the more permanent and reliable DVD format.

Step #1
Hook up your DVD recorder to the video source. It is recommended that you use the higher-quality S-video cable if you can. If you can't use these cables, just use the standard RCA dubbing cables that can be used for both video and audio.

Step #2

Connect the cable from the VHS player output to the DVD recorder's input terminal. After connecting your VHS player to the DVD recorder, you will need to select your recording media.

Step #3

Test your DVDs on a DVD player before recording to ensure compatibility. Most DVD recorders will burn onto DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R or DVD+RW. It is important to know that the -R and -RW formats are compatible with more DVD players, especially the older models.

Step #4

Select a DVD media. If you decide to use a DVD-RW or DVD+RW, you will need to erase any data that was previously stored on the disk.

Step #5

Configure your DVD recorder to preview the input signal. This can be done by pressing record and pause. You will then need to position the VHS tape source to the beginning and check the recorder's input. This step is very important because you may get a low-quality recording and waste a blank DVD if not done correctly.

Step #6

Begin playing the VHS tape and start recording. You will either want to watch the whole recording or plan to stop the process at the end. This is important so you won't record the static at the end of the tape.

Step #7

Follow your DVD recorder's specific instructions on how to add chapter stops to the recording. After adding chapter stops, you will be able to play the recording on any DVD player.
