When the winter months are upon us, traveling can often be interrupted. Cold weather, snow, sleet, ice, and torrential downpours can often delay our travel plans. Many of the airlines are also stating that with new regulations limiting tarmac delays, more cancellations are inevitable, as passengers will need to deplane. Here are some tips to help you survive the bad weather and prepare for those possible delays:

Preparation is the hallmark to any good traveler. An organized traveler will have booked a non-stop flight whenever possible. Bad weather will more likely affect your travel if your stopping at an intermediate airport. If you can't book a non-stop flight, try to get one that stops in a good weather hub city. Morning departures on most airlines are not affected by the weather as later flights. If you have a flight that is schedule later in the evening the chances are better that it will be cancelled due to the weather. It would also be good to sign up for any flight-status notifications from the airline you booked. Most will send up e-mails and text updates on the status of your flight.

Airport Strategies for Traveling in Bad Weather
If while your at the airport the weather has turned bad, there are some alternate strategies you can employ. You might consider changing airlines if your flight is cancelled. Just because your flight is not going doesn't mean that all airlines have cancelled their flights. If you find an alternative airline, ask your carrier to endorse your ticket to the new airline. They don't have to, but they may do it in the right circumstances. In addition, you can ask your carrier for a voucher if the weather gets bad. They don't have to issue one, however they may offer you cheap day pass into their business-class lounge to sit out the bad weather. It is also a good idea to make sure that your carry-on luggage has the items you may need if you end up waiting hours or even over-night for a flight. Make sure you have packed toiletries, and comfortable clothing to make the time easier.

Dealing With Bad Weather at Your Destination
This is when your mobile device is most important. Make sure you have imputed your travel information such as passport numbers, reservation codes, phone numbers for the airlines, hotels, and even your travel agent. Make sure to check the forecast as it relates to your return trip. You may want to make alternate plans and fly out later when the weather is better. Many iPad applications and smart phone apps have weather updates to help better plan your departure. While at your destination and the bad weather continues, ask the front desk of your hotel if you could extend your stay. Many hotels will be more than obliging and help to make arrangements for you.
