How to Travel Frugally in Your RV

Traveling by RV can be one of the cheapest ways to go. Generally, you don't have to worry too much about "peak season" or "off peak." While campgrounds do have higher rates during the peak season, they are not too far off from off peak rates, and they are still a lot cheaper than booking a flight, renting a car and renting a hotel room.

If you're looking to go on the cheap, here are some easy, frugal tips for traveling with your RV.

1. You don't have to go far. If you're running on a budget, you don't need to plan a cross-country vacation. Look for campgrounds or RV parks that are close to you. If you can get there and back on a tank of gas, it will save you a bundle. You can still have a great time, as many parks have activities happening on a daily basis, playgrounds, swimming, arcades and a whole host of things to do. Just get online and google campgrounds or RV parks within your state, or neighboring states.

2. Saving gas while traveling in your RV is important. With the huge weight, the more you have in it, the less gas mileage you'll have. Look for a campground or park where you can fill up your water tank. Don't leave home with a full tank of water if you don't have to. Stop to use restrooms at rest areas to save from filling up your tanks. Equally important is making sure your tires are inflated properly, and having a routine inspection done on your engine. Change the oil, just as you would in your car. Don't pack canned goods if you can purchase them from your destination, they weigh a lot and if you don't need them during the trip; buy them at the grocery store when you get there. Use paper plates and cups while traveling, even the slightest extra weight from plates and glasses will add up.

3. Make use of State Parks, their admission rates are generally cheaper. If you're disabled, or a senior citizen, sometimes you can get in for free!

4. If you plan on traveling often, join a club like "Good Sam's Club" which offers a variety of benefits, including discounts for camping. They also offer gas discounts at participating gas stations, and roadside assistance if it's needed. For a minimal annual fee, you'll be able to get your money back plus some if you use it on a regular basis!

5. Watch what you buy and where. You don't need to spend a fortune at an RV store! You can go to places like Wal-Mart and pick up personal items like toilet paper. Read the back of the package to make sure it's suitable for flushing in your RV. Additionally, you can purchase camping supplies from mass retailers a lot cheaper than specialized stores!

Most importantly, to get away for cheap, plan ahead! Chart out your drive, stock up as much as you can at the grocery store, and take your time traveling. Not only will you save on gas mileage, but you'll be able to enjoy the scenery as well. A well-organized trip saves money.
