How to Travel Light

Six Tricks to Avoid the Hassles of Overloading During Travel Vacation

If you are a frequent traveler, the last thing you want to do is to carrry a heavy load of bags when you're on a trip. I've learned the hard way that for me and my family to enjoy a vacation, it is sometimes necessary to make sacrifices.

Here are some tips you could use to really travel without the burden of belongings:

1. Generally, women bring more stuff than men (most women couldn't live without their purses!) When traveling to Las Vegas, for example, it is best to put small belongings (such as camera and phone) in the pocket. Because it's too crowded with tourists, walking is the norm. And since you will do a lot of walking in the Sin City, it's best to pack light and stay light.

2. Assuming you have planned your trip well ahead and know where "exactly" you plan to go each day, you need to find clothes for that specific itinerary. Men usually do not fuss about their attire, but women will find themselves confused on what to wear when going to a dinner. Decide what skirt or dress to wear on such a trip, and don't bring any extra.

3. Simplify your jewelry. You may be the type who likes to wear different styles of jewelry on various occasions, but on a trip, pick out a couple earrings, a necklace, a bracelet, and a watch. Leave your jewelry box at home. It is ideal to bring a small box or pouch if you need to add a few more accessories.

4. If you're renting a hotel room, it's not necessary to pack shampoo and lotion bottles. You can always ask the staff for additional supplies if you run out of toiletries in the middle of the day.

5. For a totally hassle-free vacation where you just need to spend time with your family and nature (if you're going to a beach or a ski resort), forget bringing a laptop. You can take advantage of free wi-fi computer access in many hotels.

6. If you can't avoid bringing heavy stuff such as camping gear when you're planning to hike, make sure your bags or suitcases are made of lightweight material. Remember that the heavier the load you put in your car's trunk, the more gas you waste and the more money you spend.

There are drawbacks to traveling "too" light though. You may realize that the special dress you brought has a rip in it! And since you didn't bring any extra, you may be forced to buy a replacement during the trip. Also, if the weather is chilly, you may be forced to bring extra outfits to keep yourself warm. It is important to strike a balance between hassle-free travel while keeping yourself comfortable.

The best part of traveling light is you can travel heavy on the way home! Don't forget to bring souvenirs of your trip, be they photographs, trinkets, postcards, or little gifts you found along the way.
