1. Use Duct Tape.
No, it's not a viable option. Stop raising those eyebrows! But, c'mon, it got your attention.
2. Barring the use of duct tape, bring distractions.
What are good car distractions? It really depends on the age. Infants and rear facing toddlers have many options that connect to the seat back or the car seat itself. My daughter's favorite toy in the car was a mirror! Toddlers can look at books, have a doll or stuffed animal, or even play "I spy" with Mommy or Daddy as they drive. Portable DVD players are wonderful! Older children can pack a small bag with toys of their choice.
3. Plan your trip.
Plan frequent stops. If you plan to stop every 2 hours to stretch and use a rest room, you will save yourself needless headaches that result from crying, "I have to tee-tee!" Plan meals at places where the kid can run and be loud ... better at the outdoor playground or picnic area than in the backseat of the car!
4. Bring a surprise.
Nothing gets a kid's attention faster than a new toy. Have one ready to break out when the natives start to get restless. This may be construed as bribery by some, and I proudly acknowledge their intuition. There is nothing wrong with incentives for good behavior ... if you want to call it a bribe, it'll still work, so who cares?
5. Pack food and drink.
Spill proof sippy cups and travel snack containers make great distractions and help space the stops until everyone is ready to eat.
6. When at all possible, travel at night.
It's great to travel when they can sleep. If your kids will sleep in the car, this is a wonderful time to make some progress on your journey.
No matter what: BE HAPPY! They take their cues from you ... so stay upbeat, point out the scenery, and enjoy your time. They'll be grown up soon enough and you'll be mourning their independence. Each trip is potential for some real fun together!
