Now I've broken toes before. You get broken toes by running into things, things running into you, or objects falling on your toes. One piece of advice I have is, WATCH WERE YOU'RE GOING. I have failed to follow my own advice.
In some article I read (I wouldn't want to say who or where I heard this from) the statement was made, as soon as you notice the injury... OK, when I noticed the injury I began to hop around and curse and swear. Normally you won't hear me say such awful words (right), but smacking your toes on a refrigerator might make you delirious enough to utter just about anything, even with small children present.
The next piece of information I read was to go to the ER and get x-rays. The only way I'm going to the ER for a broken toe is if I'm bleeding, the bone is showing, or my toe is horizontal to its original position.
Who would have thought that so much pain could be caused by such a small body part. Here's what a doctor will do for you. He'll take an x-ray, and feel your toe (God help him if he touched my toe). He will probably buddy tape your toes, charge you an unreal amount of money, and maybe give you some pain pills (Pain pills always make me throw up). He'll tell you to stay off your feet, ice your foot, and keep it elevated. That's exactly what I did.
It's been three days since I smacked my toes. I'm feeling better, thank you. I'm not doing a lot of walking, and I can't wear anything but flip flops, but in a couple of weeks I expect to be mostly recovered.
Every time my dog or Granddaughter comes near me I flinch. I'm afraid their rowdiness is going to roll onto my toe and I'll have to curse again (so far so good). I did decide not to go to a two year olds birthday party. I didn't want to choke some cute little toddler for stepping on me.
I'm going to try to be less clumsy in the future, but that's no guarantee that this will never happen again. This year has been kind of bad for me. I've burned myself on the oven, sliced myself with a knife and now this. Keep your fingers crossed for me as I pledge to go the rest of the year uninjured. I'm going to take this one painful step at a time.

Post a CommentHa ha- I have broken my baby toe so many times, and I agree, it hurts like hell. But going to a doctor? Why? I didn't go to a doctor when I broke my collar bone either, I'm too afraid of having something "set". I think it's funy when people go to the ER for a broken toe- fix it yourself, it'll heal unless you tore the bugger off or completley smashed it flat :)
Haha. I have broken a toe myself before and just didn't go to the dr at all. It finally healed lol
Nicely done, Cheers. :)
While the pain is intense and the aftermath ugly, a broken pinky toe is not worth all the professional medical attention we want to give it. Chin up and recover quickly!
I'm quite clumsey myself and literally can feel your pain. Sorry about your toe, hoipe you feel better soon
That should read 'splint' toes, not split!
My husband broke a toe and I'm pretty sure that I did as a kid. I totally agree with your decision to avoid ER, x-rays, etc. You get a dose of radiation, just to be told what you already know, and then they send you home, having done nothing because medical protocol doesn't bandage or split broken toes. I hear you on the language, too. Broken toes hurt like a sunofagun.
Broken toes HURT SO! Hope you are mending!
Pat, I empathize completely with you. We could compare injuries. You would think that by the time I got to be this age, I would have learned how to move about in this world. Sadly, I am so extraordinarily clumsy, I have more bruises and cuts than all of my grandchildren combined. (I could blame it on old age, but I've been this way my entire life.) Hope you're pain free SOON!
Oh my! Sorry you've gone through this. I hope you feel better!
