Dandruff is a problem that most people will have at some point in their lives; it is the excessive shedding of skin from the scalp. This results in white flakes of varying sizes appearing on the scalp and throughout the hair.

There are many possible causes for dandruff including over active oil glands, seborrhoeic dermatitis, dry skin, excess yeast and even stress.

Below are some natural remedies that can help reduce and even eradicate dandruff.

Tea tree oil.

Tea tree oil has ant bacterial and anti fungal properties, dilute a few drops in your shampoo and rub it in, leave for 5 minutes and rinse. Repeat the process with your conditioner.

Please note: DO NOT leave tea tree oil on your scalp over night, this can cause serious burns!

Cider vinegar.

Cider vinegar is hailed as a cure for many things, but it has been proven to work on even stubborn cases of dandruff, make a rinse of one part water to one part cider vinegar and apply after you shampoo and condition.

Live yoghurt.

It sounds gross, but spread live yoghurt on your scalp, leave for half an hour then rinse. Live yoghurt contains bacteria that will help maintain a yeast balance.

Bay leaves.

Add a handful of crushed bay leaves to just boiled water and leave, let it steep for 20 minutes, strain it, allow it to cool and apply to the hair. You can leave it on for about an hour before you shampoo.

Vitamins.

Ensure that your diet contains enough vitamins to keep your skin healthy and hydrated.

A lack of vitamins C,E and fish oils can result in dry skin. Make sure your diet is well balanced.
