Depression is so common that it is often undiagnosed or treated incompletely. The presence of anxiety, panic or agitation increases the risk of suicidal tendency.
According to some authors, the most effective method of achieving remission and preventing relapses is medication. However, combined treatment of psychotherapy with medication gives out real help to the patient coping up with decreased self-esteem and demoralization. But, most of the anti depressive drugs available in the market are having side effects. So, before going to the doctor, why we should not try some other methods.
Lowering the stressors
-Relaxation technique. Grab a tape of demonstration of how to relax yourself. Or you may try searching some websites. You may join yoga or meditation classes. Both are really helpful in reducing stress and thus depression.
-Find gym or aerobics classes near you. Have some work out there. Go for a morning walk or cycle riding. The "feel-good" hormone (Endorphin) is excreted during exercise.
-Swimming also gives you good exercise. The main motto is to have some sweat.
-Try some full body gentle massage.
-Get a pet of your choice. Dogs are by far the best companion around. They will keep your mood refreshing. Go out with them. Train them for different activities.
-You can give yourself a break and go for a long vacation. Lie down lazily in a beach under the sun.
-Have some new friends. Share your memory and time with them.
-Do something creative to reduce depression.
-Praying is a good way.
Natural antidepressants
-Omega- 3 fatty acid which is extensively found in fish oil. Take plenty of green leafy vegetables. They contain lots of Vitamin B complex. Avoid refined sugar in any form (carbonated sodas or sweets) as increased blood sugar reduces the secretion of endorphins.
-Avoid negative thinking.
-Give depression a shape, say round or square object. Think that whether you will let this object control your life?
-Then think that you are fine. But the only problem is depression. You are quite capable to get rid of it. Control depression instead let it control you.
-Be positive.
-You can maintain a diary. Give some time everyday to write your feelings. Note down the worries that disturb you most.
-Challenge negative thinking.
-Increase your self-esteem
-Stretch your life -- physically, intellectually, emotionally; self-esteem comes from being competent in several areas of your life. Find the areas where you are really good to yourself.
Together with all these, you may significantly lower your stress and depression.
