2. Clean the Bite: Make sure that all fire ants are removed from body and clothing. Next, clean the bite area carefully. You can clean the bite with soap and water, or use alcohol. Insects can carry a variety of infectious diseases; thus, it is important to clean the bite thoroughly and quickly to prevent infection.
3. Elevate Bite: Whenever possible, elevate the part of the body that was stung by the fire ants. For example, if the bite occurred on the leg, lie down on the couch and elevate your feet or leg using a pillow. If the bit occurred on the hand or arm, raise your arm above your head for a few minutes. This measure is taken to help reduce swelling.
4. Use Ice: If the sting area begins to swell, apply an ice pack to your skin. For best results, apply ice: 10 minutes on, and 10 minutes off.
5. Use a Pain Reliever: Depending on the severity of the sting, you may experience some pain. If you received several bites, the initial pain may be a little unbearable. After applying ice to reduce swelling, apply a pain reliever ointment. In some instances, fire ant bites itch. A pain reliever ointment, plus anti-itch can ease discomfort. If the pain starts to spread, take ibuprofen or aspirin.
6. Avoid Scratching: Sometimes, fire ant stings itch intensely. If a blister develops, do not scratch the fire ant bite. Apply ointment or anti-itch spray. Excessive scratching will cause the blister to break, and increases the risk of developing an infection. Additionally, scratching a blister can lead to permanent scarring.
7. Seek Medical Attention: The majority of fire ant stings are not a cause for serious concern. On the other hand, if you receive numerous bites, or if an allergic reaction develops, seek medical attention immediately. Allergic reactions are serious and may lead to complications such as difficulty breathing, hives, swelling, or anaphylaxis shock.
