The easiest way to protect your pet from this horrible virus is through a series of shots. It is best if they are given while the dog is still a puppy. However, if your dog hasn't been vaccinated an important aspect of survival for the animal is early detection. The earlier your dog is diagnosed, the better the chances of survival are. There are a few ways to detect a problem.
Most dogs will not show symptoms until about three to five days after the incubation period, so he will already be very sick. The dog will stop eating and later stop drinking. He or she will begin to vomit. As the stomach is emptied, the dog will begin to dry heave almost constantly and develop a hacking. Eventually you will notice blood in their stool. The dog will quickly lose weight and will be very lethargic. If treatment is not sought in time, they will succumb to dehydration.
Treatment can be very expensive. However, if you are willing to treat them at home you will save a few hundred dollars. Your pet will need subcutaneous IVs every few hours. Your vet can show you how to give them. You should try to get them to drink as much water as possible. You should also try to get them eating. They usually won't touch their kibble, so give them something they will really really like.
Table food, as a rule, isn't healthy for a pet, but it's better than nothing. Chicken or beef broth is good for starters. then try them on something a bit more solid. The virus itself doesn't pose a major threat. It is the dehydration, malnutrition, and secondary infections that are the biggest danger for your pet.

does parvo only affect puppys?
I found a puppy and within days it showed signs of Parvo. I am sure someone dumped the puppy realizing the same and not wanting to be responsbile. I took the puppy to the vet and he was prescribed Metronidazole to kill the infection. I also did the syringe feeding of Pedialyte and lots of protein. He would only eat chicken and when he wouldn't eat on his own I forced feed him yogurt and pumpkin. Not sure of which one worked but he is has stopped vomiting and stools are being to look normal. He is eating on his own and while I still give him forced water he seems to be recovering.
Parvo virus never leaves the yard once it has been there. Your best bet was not to have gotten the puppy. Even though it had had its shots, a puppy's immune system is weak.
hi i have to 7 weeks old pitbull puppies and one of them is vomiting and not eating and i dont no wut to do and i dont want her to die and i have no money for a vet can somebody please help me?
My Dog Sandy is already 1yr old. I thought past 6-8mo there are no risk of Parvo. I just noticed her yesterday and read some article where if they are too weak to drink and eat. You can give them electrolytes such as pedialyte with a little water so its not too sugary. Use a syringe (NO NEEDLE !!)you can get them at a pharmacy. Give the pedialyte every 2hrs ANally...yes u read right (Anal) . They are so dehydrated and weak that they can use their mouth and tongue to drink very well..and it makes them feel like vometing and diahrea. She is still weak but seems to respond better. I am also using another syringe (NO NEEDLE!!!) to give chicken broth gently by mouth. I will come back with update on SAndy. Good luck..and send prayers to her and I will also do same for ur pups.
did Daisy live?
My Dog Daisy is only 6 1/2 months old and has parvo. She had bad signs of pavo for 3 days now. I was just making her drink water and I thought she was going to pass away on the 3rd morning. SO I talk to all my friends and family, and they gave me some great idea's. SO I have bee feeding her protien, (I Mean Alot) I feed her a mixter of stuff, (eggs mixed with pedilite and protien powder). Then a half cup of gatoraid. I have been doing this all day. Every 2 in a half hrs. I have seen A Major diffrence in her. Now she is walking around more often and seems to have her happy sprits back. This high protien/highrating process seems to be working. I hope this helps someone! Good Luck To ALL!!!!!
