How to Treat and Prevent Newborn Baby Chafing

Cherie Bowser
Your newborn baby's skin is very fragile compared to an adult's skin. Babies don't sweat as easy as adults do, which makes it more difficult for your newborn baby to maintain their inner body temperature. Chafing is a common skin condition that can occur in your newborn baby and it is completely normal. Chafing occurs when there is friction between your newborn baby's skin and your newborn baby's clothing. Chafing can also occur in your newborn baby when the baby's skin rubs together or if a newborn baby has moisture in their wet or soiled diaper. Chafing can even occur on the umbilical cord of a newborn baby. Here are some ways to treat and prevent newborn baby chafing.

Use Newborn Diapers

Using newborn diapers can help prevent umbilical cord chafing. One of the best newborn diapers that you can purchase is Pampers Swaddlers New Baby Diapers. Pampers offers a special umbilical cord notch to protect your newborn baby's umbilical cord from the diaper which could cause friction. Pampers Swaddlers New Baby Diapers features a soft, quilted blanket-like quilted back sheet for comfort and is super absorbent to help protect the moisture from baby's skin from being wet or soiled.

Air Dry Your Baby

When changing you baby's diaper, always allow your baby's bottom to be completely dry before putting the new diaper on. This was my number one priority when changing my children's diapers. If you are in a hurry to wait for your newborn baby's bottom to be completely dry, lay your baby on the new diaper and gently flap the diaper up and down to create a flow of air. I made this a game with my infants and said "air dry, air dry" in a tune and all three of them loved it. I rarely had chaffing in the diaper department and I can contribute that to air drying your baby's bottom before putting a new diaper on.

Dress your baby in soft breathable clothing

The best clothing you can dress your newborn baby in to prevent chafing is bamboo fiber clothing. Bamboo fiber clothing is completely breathable to keep your baby comfortable. Baby Bamboo is a great place to shop for your bamboo fiber newborn baby clothing. Bamboo fiber clothing is three to four times more absorbent than cotton. Baby Bamboo is a great place to shop online for your bamboo fiber clothing for your newborn baby.

Check your Baby's Diaper Frequently

Always check your baby's diaper frequently to ensure the diaper is not wet or soiled. As soon as you notice your newborn baby's diaper wet or soiled, change the diaper immediately. You should never leave your newborn baby in wet diapers; this may cause chafing as well as diaper rash.

Use Pampers Sensitive Baby Wipes

Pamper Sensitive Baby Wipes are very mild to your newborn baby's skin. The baby wipe contains soft cotton and is gentler than a washcloth and water. When your baby has some discomfort of chafing, you want to be sure to treat them with sensitive baby wipes.

Burt's Bees Baby Bee Dusting Powder

A great product to use for newborn chafing is Burt's Bees Baby Bee Dusting Powder. Burt's Bees Baby Bee Dusting Powder absorbs wetness and will soothe your newborn baby's chafing. Cornstarch

If you need to save some money, plain cornstarch is a great product that is inexpensive that you can use to prevent newborn chafing. Cornstarch is very absorbent and will absorb the moisture from your newborn baby.

A & D Ointment

A & D Ointment will help heal dry, chafed skin for your newborn baby. You can also use the A & D Ointment to prevent newborn chafing by applying it before your newborn baby goes to bed at night to help with your newborn baby staying in a wet diaper while you both are sleeping.

Vaseline is another product that will help treat and heal the chafing of a newborn. Vaseline is also inexpensive so if you are tight on money, this may work for you and will soothe your newborn baby.
