"Non productive" is a dry cough which means it doesn't produce anything but jolts of air and pain can be experienced in parts of the body when the coughing occurs. Suppressing coughs is not a good idea. Although most people reach for cough suppressants to subside this annoying problem when your body begins this procedure it is usually to get the culprit out of your body.
