1.Prevention, this is the best place to start when treating sunburn. Always wear sunscreen when going outdoors. Even if the sky appears to be overcast and cloudy you can still get burnt. Make sure to apply the sunscreen to any exposed areas of skin including the face. Check the directions on the sunscreen, some have to be applied thirty minutes to an hour before exposure to the sun. If you are going to be in water make sure the sunscreen is waterproof.
2.Over the Counter Products, you can find several gels and creams at the drugstore to treat sunburn. Check the isle with the sunscreen and you will find several different brands of product used in soothing sunburn. Ask the pharmacist which product they recommend for treating sunburn. Make sure the product you are using does not contain alcohol. It will cause the skin to become even more dried out. Products containing Aloe will work best to cool the burn.
3. Homemade Remedies, several products found in the kitchen can relieve the burning sensation of a sunburn. Here are a few examples.
A) Vinegar- Take a wash rag and soak it in the vinegar. Gently apply the cloth to the sunburn.You can also fill a bath tub with cool water ( not cold) and add some vinegar to the bath. Repeat as often as needed.
B) Tea bags- Boil a few tea bags. Let them cool down until barely warm. Dip a towel or rag into the tea. Apply to the sunburn. You will begin to feel the sting of the burn ease up. Repeat as needed.
C) Potatoes- The juice of a potato can soothe the sunburn. Cut slices and use for the face, or place the potatoes in a blender with a little water and make a paste. Apply the paste to the burn and let dry. Once the potato paste dries take a cool shower to rinse it off.
D) Yogurt- Apply plain yogurt to the sunburn.
E) Baking Soda- Fill a bath tub with cool water and add about half a box of baking soda. You can repeat several times a day if needed.
Safety tips
-Never apply butter to a burn. This could clog the skin pores and lead to an infection.
-If you find the sunburn has blistered, do not bust the blisters, see a Dr.
-If you have headaches, confusion, fainting, or nausea associated with the sunburn call the doctor right away.
-Drink plenty of water to rehydrate the body.
