How to Turn on Blackberry Wireless Internet

Maxwell Payne
Many Blackberry smart phone models come with the ability to connect to high speed internet connections via built in Wi-Fi capabilities. While many service providers offer data plans for the Blackberry, allowing you to browse the web on the go, there may be times where you aren't able to get a strong enough signal. Or you may discover that the signal is available but too slow for your current internet need.

Wireless access points can be found in a wide range of public places such as coffee shops, libraries, and schools. Secured wireless access points can be in homes and business offices as well. If your Blackberry has Wi-Fi capabilities, you can jump on these high speed networks regardless of whether or not your phone shows cell phone service availability at the current time.

Turning on the Blackberry wireless:

While on the main screen, press the "Menu" button and use the trackball to scroll around until you find "Manage Connections." Click on this choice and scroll to "Wi-Fi" or an option that has Wi-Fi mentioned in it.

Click on this option. This will enable the Wi-Fi feature on the Blackberry which is indicated by a check mark in the check box next to "Wi-Fi."

Click on "Scan for Networks" or wait for a list of nearby wireless access points to appear below the Wi-Fi option. Choose the network that you want to join and click on it. If you don't know the name of the network you want to connect to, such as one in a coffee shop, ask an employee. If you are in your home or office, click on the one that matches your network's name.

Enter a password for secured networks if prompted. Any networks in the list that have a padlock security icon next to them require a password. You can also connect to nearby open networks if you don't have the password to secure networks on the Blackberry.

Be sure to check the signal strength next to each network name, the more bars that appear indicate a stronger connection.

Click on the "Yes" button that appears in a pop up asking if you want to remember the connection. Do this if it is your home wireless network or a commonly accessed network, such as your favorite coffee shop or school lounge.

Remember to disable the Wi-Fi option on the Blackberry by un-checking the box next to Wi-Fi when not using the Wi-Fi network. Keeping the Wi-Fi option enabled keeps the Blackberry in network scanning mode and will drain the battery quicker.
