How to Turn Your Porch into an Addition

Alicia Bodine
Whether your porch sits in the front or back of your house, you can make the most of its space by using it as an addition. Maybe you could use an extra living room, play room or reading area. Once you decide what you want to use your porch for, you can begin transforming it into another room for yourself and your family to enjoy.

You will need:

Measuring tape
Area rug
Wicker furniture
Lamps
Flowers
Vase

Follow these directions:

Step 1:
Clear the porch of contents and measure the space. That will give you an idea of how much furniture you will be able to fit on it.

Step 2:
Decide if you need to completely enclose the porch. If you live in an area where there is good weather all year long, then you may only need to have the porch screened in.

Step 3:
Purchase an area rug or a remnant for your porch floor. It doesn't have to cover the entire porch, but would look cozy under a set of table and chairs.

Step 4:
Find a nice wicker table with a set of matching chairs. If your porch is completely enclosed, you can opt for another type of table and chairs. Most likely you will just want a small table with two chairs. This would be a great spot for enjoying breakfast in the morning or having a cup of tea.

Step 5:
Add a love seat, matching chair and an end table. This creates a relaxing spot where you can read a book, play cards with your kids or just hang out. Again, you may want to purchase wicker furniture if your porch is only screened in.

Step 6:
Make sure you have lighting so that you can use your addition at night. One or two lamps is probably all you will need. Or you can always have a ceiling light installed.

Step 7:
Pick some flowers from your back yard and place them in a vase on the table. Your addition is complete.

Tips and Warnings:

Hang some pictures on the porch walls. Make sure you use the walls that back up against the house. This will give the porch the same feeling as the other rooms in your house.

Don't use plastic furniture. It looks tacky and breaks easily.

  • Wicker furniture works great because it is so durable.
  • Hang portraits or mirrors on the walls to give it that livingroom feeling.
  • Make sure you measure your space so that you know how much furniture you can fit in your room.
