The attic is one of those spaces that people often neglect as part of the house. But this quiet and private space is a perfect place that can become your family's study room, a play or game room, or even a private gym. To turn your attic into a living and useful space, start by deciding what type of room you want. It is a good idea to also use this time to make sure you clear any tools or construction materials that may have been left there, which could potentially harm someone. Clear the space and make it look livable. By now you should be close to deciding what type of room you want it to be. This is because you will need different types of furnishings depending on its use.

Next, get your local penny saver magazine for news on local garage sales. You can often see signs of garage sales in your neighborhood so don't forget to go and see what you can find. Shopping at garage sales will save you money.

Look for things that can add colors to your attic. Items such as posters, area rugs, ottomans or relaxing chairs are great ideas for an attic space. You can get a lot of these at moving sales, and these days with a lot of people relocating and moving out of state due to the mortgage mess and foreclosure nightmares, you might be able to find great deals at moving sales.

After you have decided what you want to do with the space, and purchased what you need, it is a good idea to check your ceiling joists beneath the attic because sine more weight is going to be put on the upper floor, the things below would need to be adjusted. Insulating the walls and the floor would be another thing to consider. You don't want to find yourself too hot or too cold in the upper deck. It should be a comfortable space for your fun and enjoyment.
