How to Use Twitter to Grow Your Business

Rhetta Akamatsu
Twitter is a wonderful tool for businesses, but there are rules, and there are ways to gain followers and create business and other ways to turn potential new customers right off. Here are some tips for you:

1. When people follow you, unless they are obvious SPAMmers, follow them back!

2. Do not just post about your own business or website. Share information of interest in your field, retweet posts that you find interesting, share the occasional post about yourself.

2. Offer contests and giveaways exclusively for your Twitter followers. Everyone loves exclusive deals!

3. Find and follow community-related sites and complimentary businesses. For instance, if you live in Atlanta, you might follow Atlanta_Now or InsidePerimeter, plus ATL_restaurants, etc.

4. Pay attention to the people your followers recommend and use Twitter's seach feature as well as sites like Mr. Tweet to find targeted people to follow, so that they can find you and follow you back. If you sell books, look for booklovers. If you a travel agent, look for travel lovers. You get the idea.

5. Do tweet regularly, but try to give your posts some value. Don't stray too far from your subject too often, unless you are promoting a charity or sharing community news.

Most of all, have fun with your Twitter account. Make connections with your followers. Everyone wants to do business with a friend if they can, after all.
