How to Make an Ugly Betty Costume for Halloween

Kay Whittenhauer
The three most important components of an Ugly Betty Halloween costume are braces, hair and glasses. Here are some tips on what you'll need to for your do it yourself Ugly Betty Costume:

Braces: Ugly Betty has blue braces. If you have blue braces, you HAVE to be Ugly Betty for Halloween! Even if you're a boy. (Especially if you're a boy! How funny would that be!) If you have braces in a color other than blue, that's fine, too. If you don't have braces, you can try putting aluminum foil on your teeth. (I cringe at that thought, though.) In a last ditch effort, you could use a blue sports mouth guard in lieu of the blue braces.

Hair: Ugly Betty has long(ish) brown hair that hangs straight down on both sides. Her thick bangs are cut straight across, and her whole head of hair has a bit of a frizzy wave to it. Her hairstyle can best be described as a blunt cut that needed a trim about a year ago.

If you happen to have long brown hair with bangs, Ugly Betty would be the perfect costume for you! To get the frizz in your hair, try teasing just the top layer randomly. If your hair is long with bangs, but not brown, use a temporary hair dye for your Ugly Betty costume. If there's no way you can "do" Ugly Betty hair with what God gave you, purchase a wig.

Glasses: Ugly Betty wears red plastic-rimmed glasses, so the "best" Ugly Betty costume will have them. You can purchase fake glasses with red frames in the accessories department of most clothing stores. If you happen to wear plastic-rimmed prescription glasses that aren't red, I think you could pull off the Ugly Betty look by wrapping red Saran Wrap around the frame.

With those three components in place, everyone will know that you're Ugly Betty for Halloween. But if you really want to go all out, add some Ugly Betty accessories to your Halloween costume.

Clothes: Ugly Betty is notorious for wearing ugly clothes. Betty's favorite look is called 'not matching'. For example, if you have plaid shorts in pastel shades and a patterned top in jewel tones, that's a perfect Ugly Betty outfit.

Necklace: Ugly Betty's signature look is a fake pearl necklace with a fake gold letter B pendant hanging from it. It's not essential, but it's a very nice detail if you're entering a Halloween costume contest.

Make-up: Ugly Betty appears not to wear make-up. If you absolutely have to wear make-up, go easy on it. Nothing would do more to ruin the Ugly Betty effect than over-done "glam" make-up.

Props: Ugly Betty works for a fashion magazine where her co-workers often make fun of her for being chubby. Good props for an Ugly Betty Halloween costume are a stack of fashion magazines and a plastic submarine sandwich.
