How to Unclog Drains Without Toxic Chemicals

J.C. JORDAN
I live in an apartment building where my bathroom and kitchen drains are connected to my neighbors. In an effort to keep my drains clean, I used a grease jar (this can be any empty jar) to pour used oil into before washing the pans. And, all my drains have hair catchers. Inevitably I still get clogs from my neighbors.

Now, what's the first thing we all reach for - Drano, or another like product. These types of products are Caustic and expensive as well as being bad for the environment. While complaining to a friend about he constant clogs she gave me an inexpensive and green remedy.

Take a 1/2 cup of baking soda and pour it into the drain, follow it with 1/2 cup of white vinegar (pour slowly, do not dump), solution will bubble; plug drain and let stand 1 to 2 hours. Then flush drain with water. Presto, clog cleared.

I had my doubts when my girlfriend swore this would work and was amazed when it did! Even if you don't have clogged drains you can use this method as a once a month maintenance method to keep drains clear.
