How to Uninvite Wedding Guests

Polite Ways to Univite Wedding Guests

Aaron Rubin
So you've sent out the invitations and the RSVPs are rolling in. All of a sudden, there are more RSVPs than there are spaces. How do you go about uninviting some guests? First, you have to decide who will be uninvited. Here are some ways of doing this:

1) Decide how many to uninvite. Once you have figured this out, decide how many will be from the groom's side and how many will be from the bride's.

2) Determine who will be traveling the furthest. Ask these people first. They may not be looking forward to paying for the flight.

3) Eliminate distant relatives or friends. Your mother's third ex-cousin-in-law may not be one of your closest relatives.

4) Uninvite families with small children, as the children might not enjoy the ceremony.

How to go about uninviting people.

1) Explain the situation. "Too many people RSVPed." or "We're trying to keep costs down because we're planning on buying a house," etc...

2) Invite them to the reception. The reception usually can accommodate more people that the church. You may want to invite people for after the meal to save costs.

3) Explain that it is not personal and that you hope they understand.

There may be some hard feelings, but you have to do what you have to do. This is a very important day for you and you shouldn't be stressing about guests being put-off.

You can also start a waiting list and see if space becomes available. If it does, you can reinvite some people. Another important thing to remember is that you should not expect gifts from those you uninvited.

These are all important things to consider, but as said before, the most important thing is that you have a very special day.

Good luck!
